Fresh from Rod Stewart opening the SSE Hydro, it was the turn of another group of music legends to take to the stage at the new Glasgow venue: Fleetwood Mac.
The Fleetwood Mac gig was literally the hottest ticket in town (with some selling for hundreds of pounds online) and the band did not disappoint the 13,000 strong crowd that filled the arena.
Working their way through their impressive and varied catalogue of hits, to a backdrop of stunning visuals, Fleetwood Mac proved that regardless of having been in the music industry for more than 40 years, they still have the skills, songs and energy that would put many younger acts to shame.
Highlights included a rousing rendition of The Chain and Stevie Nicks’ stunning vocals on tracks like Gold Dust Woman.
Armed with her tambourine and floaty black outfits, her spinning and hair swaying was simply captivating to watch, with many fans exclaiming “we love you Stevie”.
She further got the Scottish fans on side when she told a story about staying in Turnberry four years ago and spending time at a falconry centre, where she learned to handle a small falcon she lovingly christened Rhiannon.
She said: “Scotland, your birds changed my life forever,” and as bizarre as that sounds, it seemed to go down a treat with the fans.
Indeed, Fleetwood Mac are not a band who are afraid to chat throughout their set, with Lindsey Buckingham and Mick Fleetwood also regaling the crowds with tales of how the band got together and the stories behind certain tracks.
A stand out moment of the night came when Lindsey appeared on stage on his own, armed with his acoustic guitar.
As he launched into Big Love, the crowd went wild as he showed off the guitar skills that have made him one of the most admired guitarists in the world. It truly was a special moment.
It was also a special night for Lindsey, as he was celebrating his birthday. Despite joking that he’d rather forget it, the Glasgow crowds weren’t about to let it go unnoticed, serenading him with a rendition of Happy Birthday.
Giant images of a marching band projected onto a screen worked perfectly with an energetic rendition of Tusk, while hits like Go Your Own Way and Don’t Stop had the entire Hydro dancing.
Add to that an incredible drum solo section from Mick Fleetwood and it’s safe to say fans left in the knowledge that they had witnessed something special.
