VIDEOS: 10/2 Chicago: Fleetwood Mac captivates ‘The Windy City’

As they had done in Minneapolis two night earlier, Fleetwood Mac captivated their legion of adoring fans at Chicago’s United Center on Thursday evening, performing the first of two sold-out shows in “The Windy City.” Fans were undoubtedly thrilled to see keyboardist and singer-songwriter Christine McVie reunite with her old bandmates after 16 years in secluded retirement. Chicago fans clearly missed McVie and acknowledged those feelings by cheering loudly whenever she started to sing one of her songs, such as the 1977 Rumours hit song “You Make Loving Fun,” the second song of the evening. Their approval grew throughout the night, as she performed one familiar Fleetwood Mac song after another, such as “Over My Head,” “Say You Love,” “Little Lies,” and “Songbird.”

McVie isn’t the only member to have left and then returned to the band much later. In 1987, guitarist Lindsey Buckingham unceremoniously walked out on the other four members just before a scheduled world tour and having the chance to perform onstage the songs that he had meticulously produced for the Tango in the Night album. But, like McVie, Buckingham also returned to Fleetwood Mac (in 1997), after a period of solo work and self-reflection. So with old wounds healed, the band is making amends in the current tour, by performing four tracks from the tumultuous Tango in the Night era: the Billboard Top 20 hits “Big Love,” “Seven Wonders,” Little Lies,” and “Everywhere.”

Fleetwood Mac wrap up their stay in Chicago on Friday with an encore performance at the United Center.
