Mike Campbell on Fleetwood Mac, The Dirty Knobs, Stevie Nicks

I always thought, if the Heartbreakers retire then I’ll do my band – so now I’m doing it and I’m having a blast.

Mike Campbell, guitarist for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and more recently Fleetwood Mac, has unveiled a new band called – ahem – The Dirty Knobs.

The LA-based band will release their debut album Wreckless Abandon via BMG on March 20. It was produced by Campbell with George Drakoulias, and all songs are written by Campbell. The album features contributions from singer–songwriter and guitarist Chris Stapleton as well as fellow Heartbreaker Benmont Tench. Additionally, Klaus Voormann created the album artwork.

“It started out as something to do between Heartbreakers tours,” Campbell tells Uncut. “I got these guys and we played little clubs around town. We just became a good little band and got really close. It’s my band – I write the songs and get to sing the best I can – but it’s a real band, it’s not a solo project. We’re not together for money – we love to play together and we were having a blast. And then when life dealt me the cards it dealt me, I thought, what am I going to do now? I always thought, at some point, if the Heartbreakers retire then I’ll do my band – so now I’m doing it and I’m having a blast.

“We’re going to go on tour in the States – start small, play the little places, and see how far we get. It’s exciting. I can’t just sit around and play Heartbreakers records, I’ve got to go out and do something. I’m really enjoying it.”

Campbell also reveals that Fleetwood Mac are currently on hiatus after their recent mammoth world tour. “It was a year and a half! I’ve never toured that long in my life. It was really joyful. Great songs, and I love that rhythm section – I had so much fun playing with Mick and John. We ended the tour and we had a meeting. They are all even older than me, and I’m pretty old, and they were saying, I don’t think we’re up for doing any more long tours like this ever again. Stevie wants to do a solo show, she’s doing that right now, but in a year or so, if a handful of dates show up that made sense, everybody is open to doing those. So we’re on hiatus until things develop.”

Mike Campbell hints at possible Stevie Nicks solo tour

Guitarist Michael Campbell, who joined Fleetwood Mac on its most recent tour, has hinted at a possible Stevie Nicks solo tour that could last a year and a half, in a new interview with The Australian Musician.

Campbell also recounts when Mick Fleetwood asked him to join Fleetwood Mac.

Relevant excerpts from the interview appear below.

UPDATE: The quote about a possible tour was deleted from the original article, but it’s shown below.

Tell me about the Mick Fleetwood phone call that started this new journey with Fleetwood Mac.

“It was about four months after Tom had passed away and I have my own band (The Dirty Knobs) and I have a record coming out and I was planning on just addressing that, doing that full time. I didn’t really have any other plans. I was sitting in my backyard and my phone rang and I had met Mick once or twice at sessions or whatever but we weren’t like friends or anything. He said hi, how you doing, Lindsey has left the band … it’s what he told me, I didn’t know that he was asked to leave … so he says would you be interested in joining Fleetwood Mac? He said this is not coming from Stevie, it’s coming from me and I have been listening to your catalogue and this is not an audition, if you want it, we would love to have you. I said give me a day to think about it. I thought over the whole Lindsey aspect of it and thought, this is a good thing. So I called back and said yeah and it has been a wonderful experience. It’s the best rhythm section, longest lasting rhythm section of all time. No one else has lasted that long in rock ’n’ roll and they are beautiful. It’s a magical feel that they have and I get to play with them every night. What a joy for a guitar player!  The songs are great and Stevie and I have a great history together. We’ve written songs, we get along. Of course we then bring Neil Finn in to help with the vocals and he’s just a charming dude, we get along great. Christine, John, they are just wonderful people and we have a blast every night. I know it is hard for them losing a member, I have lost a member. It’s sad but you have to carry on and I think we are doing a good job.

“I know Fleetwood Mac is going to take quite a hiatus because Stevie wants to do a solo tour and that will take a year and a half. I don’t know what their plans are in the future. My phone is always on if they want to do something else.”

Fleetwood Mac kicks off ’50 Years’ tour

The newly rebooted Fleetwood Mac, with new members Neil Finn and Michael Campbell, kicked off its “50 Years” tour on Wednesday night at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, performing a diverse set list, which drew from the band’s vast 50-year catalog.

It was the band’s first show of the tour without guitarist Lindsey Buckingham, who was dismissed from Fleetwood Mac in February. Addressing that elephant in the room, the band steered clear of most of Buckingham’s songs, but honored his indelible contributions to Fleetwood Mac’s enduring history with his first band composition “Monday Morning” from 1975’s self-titled “white album” and his most famous one “Go Your Own Way,” from Grammy’s 1977 Album of the Year, the almighty Rumours.

The group kept perennial favorites in the set — “Dreams,” “Rhiannon,” Say You Love Me,” among many others. But they occasionally delved deep into their back-catalog, pulling tracks from 1973’s Mystery to Me (Bob Welch’s mysterious “Hypnotized”), 1979’s Tusk (Stevie Nicks’ remorseful “Storms), and 1987’s Tango in the Night (the obscure UK single “Isn’t It Midnight”). The message was clear: Fleetwood Mac was a productive entity with and without Buckingham.

That work ethic began 50 years ago when Fleetwood Mac released its first recording on the Blue Horizon label, as a British blues act. In Tulsa, they acknowledged these roots by playing two songs from their formative years with Fleetwood Mac co-founder Peter Green: “Oh Well” and the pre-Santana “Black Magic Woman” (on which Stevie Nicks took the lead); and another two songs for the transitive years that followed (1969-1974) before Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham joined Fleetwood Mac: “Tell Me All the Things You Do” from 1969’s Kiln House and “Hypnotized” from 1973’s Mystery to Me.

And the tributes continued with the present day, as Stevie Nicks honored the late Tom Petty with a touching rendition of “Free Fallin’,” with former Heartbreakers’ guitarist Michael Campbell strumming right along in memoriam.

The highly accomplished Neil Finn (of Crowded House fame) and Michael Campbell (of the aforementioned Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers) showcased their talents, as well, with Finn taking the male lead on many songs, notably in “Second Hand News.” Finn also played two of his own tracks, Split Enz’s 1980 hit “I Got You” and Crowded House’s 1986 anthem “Don’t Dream It’s Over.” The low-key Campbell served as a strong guitar lead for the band and sang lead on Peter Green’s blues rocker “Oh Well,” a favorite cover tune of Tom Petty.

The surprising show closer, “All Over Again,” from 1995’s Time, paid homage to another period in the band’s history without Buckingham. With lyrics like “Well it’s it’s time to move on to the rain / And finally break the chain / In spite of the heartaches / And troubles in love / I’d do it all over (do it all over),” it will was a fitting counterpart to the show’s opener “The Chain” and, more importantly, upholding the creed that has defined the band all these years, simply “Don’t stop,” or ironically as Buckingham might put it, “Let’s get on with the show.”

During the performance, there appeared to be some audio-mixing issues, as the sound levels for Stevie and Christine’s microphones were noticeably lower. Despite the technical glitch, the band performed well together, showcasing the musical talents of its newest veteran members. (Finn fronts the accomplished band Crowded House and Campbell comes from the legendary Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.)
