  • REVIEW: Fans brave Perth downpour for Fleetwood Mac

A LANDSLIDE brought down Subiaco Oval when all five original members of legendary band Fleetwood Mac stormed the stage in the midst of a torrential downpour.

It takes a special kind of die-hard fan to sit in a poncho for two hours on a Friday night while it’s bucketing down, but Perth fans would not be deterred from seeing the band reunited on stage for the first time in 16 years.

Accomplished singer-songwriter and keyboardist Christine McVie was welcomed back with open arms after leaving the band for personal reasons back in 1998 — the missing piece in the brilliant, complex jigsaw puzzle the band was so well-known for.

McVie said she was thrilled to be back with her “favourite people in the world” before dedicating “Everywhere” to the band.

While the Mac have enjoyed a huge amount of commercial success over the years, hits from the best-selling Rumours album were stripped back to basics as the band came clean about relationship struggles and internal dynamics.

“I think our professional lives and our personal lives have always been intertwined and that’s what’s part of the appeal,” vocalist Lindsey Buckingham said.

“The point is we’ve been together for a long time though and we’re still here. We all broke up and we all knew we had to fulfill our destiny and somehow we stayed together.

“We would bleed sometimes but I think what you have to say is that below the struggles we seem to rise with a great deal of love.”

And with that, the band broke out into an emotional rendition of “Bleed to Love Her.”

While Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks ended their relationship many years ago it’s evident some embers still burn.

The pair shared lingering glances and hand-holding during “Sara” and after an acoustic duet of “Landslide.”

Buckingham — whose guitar became an extension of his body on multiple occasions during the night — did not disappoint when he cut loose during a finger-prickingly good number on “Big Love.”

Drenching rain, sold-out ponchos and chilling winds were not enough to stop fans dancing in the aisles and cheering for the encore.

The show was a genuine reflection of the band’s journey over the decades: the love, the heartbreak, the turbulence, and the final reunion as friends.

REVIEW: Mac make loving them fun, even in the rain

    [slideshow_deploy id=’198924′]

Thunder only happens when it rains, according to Stevie Nicks, whose legendary band Fleetwood Mac turned on a dream gig in the wet last night.

Playing to 25,000 adoring fans at Domain Stadium, the megastars promised a party in the rain. “My limousine driver told me it never rains in Perth,” Nicks said. “We bring the rain.”

The mighty Mac also brought the hits, plus an old friend in Christine McVie, much missed on the past two Perth visits.

The English singer, songwriter and pianist retreated from the spotlight after the band’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 1998.

Fleetwood Mac were to visit in 2013 but cancelled after bassist John McVie was diagnosed with cancer. During the delay while McVie had treatment, drummer Mick Fleetwood convinced McVie’s former wife to rejoin the band. Christine McVie’s return meant Fleetwood Mac’s three great songwriters — the others being American ex-lovers Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, who joined the English blues band in 1974 —were back in the saddle for the band’s first Aussie tour since 2009.

After hitting the stage with “The Chain,” the Rumours rocker credited to the whole band, the trio shared the songs.

Other Rumours favourites — McVie’s “You Make Loving Fun,” Nicks’ “Dreams” and Buckingham’s “Second Hand News” — came in quick succession.

Classic pop hits —”Landslide,” “Everywhere,” “Little Lies” — rained down on fans as the Mac clung tight to their golden era.

The famous five, plus extra musicians and singers, delivered a marathon set at the fifth of 13 scheduled Australian dates for their On With the Show world tour. Classic songs, classic line-up and still plenty of drama.

    Truly classic.

Wet Fleetwood Mac gig extra memorable

Editor’s note: The writer published a lengthier review the following day.

Before reality TV, there was Fleetwood Mac.

Thirty-eight years ago, the legendary transatlantic band laid bare their drug-fuelled intraband bed-hopping in Rumours, one of the greatest and highest selling albums of all-time.

Unlike The Bachelor or Married at First Sight, the Mac don’t need to manufacture their drama – not even on the marathon On With the Show world tour, which stopped in Perth on a wet Friday night.

Rain bucketed down on 25,000 fans at Domain Stadium on an evening singer Stevie Nicks remarked was the “strangest, most dramatic, most memorable rainiest night” of the lengthy tour.

Fleetwood Mac performed in the rain for thousands of fans at Domain Stadium. Pictures: Simon Santi/The West Australian
The presence of English songbird Christine McVie, who reunited with the band last year after a 16-year absence, also heightened the sense of occasion.

The stormy weather didn’t prevent Fleetwood Mac from revisiting their personal tempests across a 23-song, two-and-a-half hour greatest hits show, which drew heavily on Rumours.

Nine songs from the 1977 opus were aired, starting with band co-write The Chain before You Make Loving Fun, Dreams and Second Hand News made for a stunning start to the show.

Rhiannon from the erstwhile British blues band’s 1975 self-titled album, the first to feature then-couple Nicks and guitar god Lindsey Buckingham, was a smooth, early highlight. As the Gold Dust Woman shimmied behind her trademark shawls and sang “woman, taken by the wind”, many in the crowd could empathise with the titular Welsh witch.

That was a time when cracks were seriously showing in the Mac, according to Buckingham, who said the members felt the need to stay together to “fulfil destiny” – that is, turn drama into an incredible parade of pop classics.

His solo acoustic performance of Big Love was a highlight, as was the now-expected performance on Nicks’ plaintive Landslide as a duo. The ex-lovers keep their romantic history front and centre throughout the show.

“Our hearts are into it,” Nicks joked as she moved her microphone back away from the rain. “In my mind, you’re dancing above the clouds.”

While some of the performance echoed previous visits for similar big outdoor concerts in 2004 and 2009 – band leader Mick Fleetwood’s eccentric drum solo during World Turning tested some drenched fans – the presence of McVie added something special to Friday night.

Eighties hits Everywhere and Little Lies, her verse on encore highlight Don’t Stop and solo rendition of signature piano ballad Songbird to complete the evening all made this gig extra memorable.

The relentless rain also helped make Friday night unforgettable, as fans danced in ponchos to the euphoric performance of Go Your Own Way. “If I could, baby, I’d give you my world,” Buckingham sang. How about some dry clothes and hot chocolate?

  • REVIEW: Fleetwood Mac at Coopers Stadium

REVIEW: Fleetwood Mac at Coopers Stadium

Fleetwood Mac’s full classic line-up was in fine form before diverse Adelaide crowd.

    All photos by Kristy Delaine
    [slideshow_deploy id=’197813′]

Recalling the sports stadium vibe of Fleetwood Mac’s “Tusk” video, Coopers Stadium was an apt setting for one of the last true stadium bands (who surprisingly admitted they rarely play outdoor concerts).

On what could be their last tour, the classic line-up (sorry Peter Green fans) was in fine form in front of a diverse crowd that ranged from baby boomers to 30-somethings raised on their parents’ Fleetwood Mac albums and 20-something women dressed in their best Stevie Nicks-inspired gear. The post-1975 Fleetwood Mac era is one that has it detractors but the all-ages crowd proved how the Nicks/Buckingham era of the band has only become more influential as the years have progressed; excellent songwriting lasts as fashion fades.

Angus & Julia Stone seemed an odd opening choice but they represented a large percentage of the crowd, the children of the original fans. With four back-up musicians, the Stone siblings showed why they were a much better choice than the kinds of acts that usually get picked for these sort of tours (such as Jimmy Barnes or, god forbid, John Farnham), as their Nicks-influenced Gypsy mysticism was prevalent during their largely rock/blues set. The siblings also seemed humbled by the occasion; paying tribute to the headline act once they finished.

I’ve never described a concert as sweet before but the reunited transatlantic group was just that, as former partners Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham walked to the stage hand-in-hand, and Nicks blew kisses to long-time absentee Christine McVie (who has been living the quiet life in her English castle for the past 16 years). The dysfunction behind some of pop and rock’s greatest moments seemed to be all but forgotten. Beginning with “The Chain,” McVie’s brilliant “You Make Loving Fun” showed why she is the secret cog in the Fleetwood Mac machine. As one of the most underrated pop hit makers of the ‘70s and ‘80s, McVie’s collection of earnest pop (“Little Lies,” “Everywhere,” “Think About Me” and “Say You Love Me”) were some of the highlights of a greatest hits concert few bands could match.

Nicks’ “Rhiannon” was an early crowd-pleaser, as the audience up front temporarily got off their seats for the early Nicks/Buckingham Mac era classic. The light rig lowered for Buckingham’s experimental pop masterpiece “Tusk,” with the energetic visionary of the band (who looks extremely fit at 66 years of age) excited by the rousing performance of “Tusk,” jumping up and down at the completion of the marching band classic.

The middle of the show largely showcased Nicks and Buckingham, who proved to be one of the greatest ring-ins in music history when Mick Fleetwood recruited the struggling duo and they helped to turn his blues outfit into a stadium rock/pop behemoth in the mid-‘70s. Buckingham performed a rousing solo rendition of “Big Love” while Nicks’ “Landside” showed that famous husky voice has lost none of its enigma even though Nicks doesn’t twirl with as much as ease as she once did. “Gold Dust Woman” was pure magic before “Go Your Own Way” closed proceedings.

Despite some cheesy moments (drum solos and ‘inspiring’ anecdotes in-between tracks), you could feel the love between the band, who had to cancel their 2013 Australian tour due to John McVie’s (who played his bass unceremoniously in the background) cancer scare.

From a selfish music lover’s point of view, the positive to take from the 2013 cancellation is that the 2015 tour saw Adelaide witness the full classic line-up, complete with John McVie’s former wife, Christine, who drove home her influence with two of the encore’s highlights: “Don’t Stop” and a beautiful rendition of “Songbird.”

A brilliant night for young and old.

Fleetwood Mac performed their final show at Allphones Arena on Sunday night, the third of three concerts in Sydney. The band moves on to Adeleide, where they will perform at Coopers Stadium on Wednesday night.

Stevie dedicated “Landslide” to 2015 X Factor Australia contestants Jess & Matt last night in Sydney:

“I hope that you two… No matter what happens with this show, it doesn’t matter. What matters is that you guys keep going and become that great duo because the world needs a great duo. And you can do it. So do it for me, do it for Lindsey, do it for music. Anyway, this is for you. It’s called ‘Landslide.’”

  • REVIEW: Beloved rockers return to Sydney

REVIEW: Beloved rockers return to Sydney

Fans cheer, laugh, cry, and show love for Fleetwood Mac on their Australian tour.

    [slideshow_deploy id=’190855′]

IF you could harness all the energy devoted to singing Fleetwood Mac songs in loungerooms, cars and bars over the past 40 years, it would create a mighty bang.

The audience at the opening Australian concert by the legendary band at Sydney’s Allphones Arena brought an energy powered by all those moments, whether a solo karaoke of their favourite song, perhaps “Go Your Own Way,” or the more universally sung-to-the-rafters “Don’t Stop.”

Their myth is rooted in the reality of their drug-fuelled romantic entanglements and bust-ups as documented so honestly and historically on the greatest breakup album of all time Rumours.

The Fleetwood Mac on offer in 2015 is one every fan had not dared hope for over the past 16 years; the return of the classic line-up featuring Christine McVie.

This reunion appears to have a restored a natural order, and much-missed songs, to the concert life of Mac and the band’s devoted fanbase.

On this greatest hits tour, resumed after bassist John McVie’s treatment for cancer, the beloved rockers sounded perfect and clearly enjoyed embarking on this concert caper again.

Yet this isn’t a band simply running through a well-structured hits set played with the ease of familiarity and virtuosity.

There was seriously a lot of love in the room, both on and offstage, even when Lindsey Buckingham got a little creepy with his vocals on “Never Going Back Again.”

And it’s not only the love these five musicians have for each other, which is truly astounding when you consider how they tortured each other back on the 70s and 80s.

Where the love, and the joy and even a few tears, really happens, is in the audience.

Like the three people behind me harmonising so tunefully to the opening track “The Chain,” the band’s statement of intent to keep it all together for this tour, at least.

Or the enthusiastic air drummers everywhere in the crowd who played along to “Tusk.”

Or the big Christine fan who almost busted out of his chair space as he danced and sang along to “You Make Loving Fun.”

Or me who may have got something in both eyes during “Sara,” a song introduced to the setlist for the Australian concerts.

That’s the thing about a Fleetwood Mac concert which remains truer now than ever in those creatively and personally tense eras.

The Mac are just such a big deal to the fans, and they respect that loyalty by not messing with the memories.

Stevie Nicks twirls is her layers of black and mic stand of scarves and ribbons.

Buckingham is an engaging guitar show-off, that rare musician whose hyper emotional performance somehow remains connected to the song rather than veering too far off into an indulgent display of proficiency.

Christine just delivers that understated and warm depth she always brought to the band.

And then there’s that devilishly handsome and beguiling rhythm section of bassist John and the masterful, commanding drummer Mick Fleetwood.

The world would have been a less magical and mirthful and musical place without Fleetwood making this band all those decades ago.

What remains at the end of a night which included “Tusk,” “Dreams,” “Rhiannon,” “Gold Dust Woman,” “Landslide,” “Big Love,” “Go Your Own Way,” “Everywhere,” “Little Lies” and “Songbird” are the feeling that the songs you have always loved from one of the world’s greatest bands still sound as good as they do in your memory.

    And that rarely happens.
