    Sometimes It’s a Bitch (1991)

“Sometimes It’s a Bitch” is Track 1 on Timespace: The Best of Stevie Nicks (1991), Stevie Nicks‘ first retrospective release.

    About the Song

Co-written by Jon Bon Jovi  and Billy Falcon, “Sometimes It’s a Bitch” was one of three new songs recorded for Timespace. Stevie initially had reservations about singing the song because of the word “bitch.” Jon deferred to the meaning of the song about life’s trials and tribulations and eventually convinced Stevie to record the song. Modern Records had similar reservations about the song’s title, issuing the song as “Sometimes (It’s a Bitch)” in its radio marketing campaign.

    Lyrics

Well I’ve run through rainbows and castles of candy
I cried a river of tears from the pain
I try to dance with what life has to hand me
    My partner’s bring pleasure…my partner’s bring pain
There are days when I swear I could fly like an eagle
And dark desperate hours that nobody sees
My arms stretched triumphant on top of the mountain
My head in my hands…down on my knees

    Sometimes it’s a bitch…sometimes it’s a breeze
Sometimes love’s blind…and sometimes it sees
    Sometimes it’s roses…and, sometimes it’s weeds
    Sometimes it’s a bitch…sometimes it’s a breeze

I’ve reached in darkness and come out with treasure
I’ve laid down with love and I woke up with lies
What’s it all worth only the heart can measure
    It’s not what’s in the mirror…but what’s left inside

    Sometimes it’s a bitch…sometimes it’s a breeze
Sometimes love’s blind…and sometimes it sees
    Sometimes it’s roses…and, sometimes it’s weeds
    Sometimes it’s a bitch…sometimes it’s a breeze

You gotta take it as it comes
    Sometimes it don’t come easy
I’ve run through rainbows and castles of candy
And I’ve cried a river of tears from the pain
I tried to dance with what life had to hand me
And if I could…I’d do it all over again

    Sometimes it’s a bitch…sometimes it’s a breeze
Sometimes love’s blind…and sometimes it sees
    Sometimes it’s roses…and, sometimes it’s weeds
    Sometimes it’s a bitch…sometimes it’s a breeze
Sometimes the picture just ain’t what it seems
You get what you want…but it’s not what you need
    Sometimes it’s a bitch…sometimes…it’s a breeze

    Well it’s a breeze…it’s a breeze…it’s a breeze…

  • Real Tears (1989)

    Real Tears (1989)

“Real Tears” is a completed track from Stevie NicksThe Other Side of the Mirror sessions (1988-1989). It appears as a bonus track on the “Long Way to Go” and “Two Kinds of Love” singles and Disc 9 of Complete Studio Albums & Rarities (2023).

    About the Song

Stevie Nicks recorded “Real Tears” during The Other Side of the Mirror sessions (1988-1989), one of several songs considered for the album. Producer Rupert Hines provided the music for Stevie’s lyrics and background vocals on the completed track.

    Lyrics

    There was another girl
    She was much like you
    She lived in the past
And had trouble with the future
Well, she walked with her head held high
And her hands held down at the sides

It was everything that I had not wanted
There were reasons to be crazy

    Make no mistake about it
(When she stopped crying her eyes got bright)
    Make no mistake about it
(She walked with her head held high and her hands held down at her
    sides)
    Make no mistake about it
( Make no mistake about it…those were real tears)
    Make no mistake about it
(Make no mistake about it…I’ve always been unreal)

And you walked a thousand miles in a few weeks
Very little love exists through the rain and the fog
    And her always hanging mirror

It was everything that I had not wanted
There were reasons to be crazy
    Those were real tears

    Make no mistake about it
(When she stopped crying her eyes got bright)
    Make no mistake about it
(She walked with her head held high and her hands held down at her
    sides)
    Make no mistake about it
    Those were reals
( Make no mistake about it…those were real tears)
    Make no mistake about it
(Make no mistake about it…I’ve always been unreal)
    I’ve always been unreal

She takes a lot of time sometimes
It takes a lot of time to know her
    She will disappear before you
Right in front of your very eyes

    Down through the years
    She has accepted her life
With her hands held down in fear
Take a tear of a rose and push it into your hands

    These are real tears

    Make no mistake about it
(When she stopped crying her eyes got bright)
    Make no mistake about it
(She walked with her head held high and her hands held down at her
    sides)
    Make no mistake about it
    Those were real tears
( Make no mistake about it… those were real tears)
    Make no mistake about it
(Make no mistake about it… I’ve always been unreal)
    I’ve always been unreal

It was everything I had not wanted
Whoa, there were reasons to be crazy
    And more reasons
Well, that she was just like you
(Make no mistake about it…I’ve always been unreal)

So she keeps them in her heart
(She walked with her head held high and her hands held down at her
    sides)
    Keeps them in her heart

EMI also released the song as a single with an alternate cover in Europe and Australia.

    Lyrics

    Ooh and on you run
You search for love and you hate searching
You wait for love and you hate waiting
    You say I hate this
    Well it’s just another test
‘Cause there are two kinds of love
To do the thing that we do the best
    My masterpiece

Who in the world do you think that you are fooling
Well I’ve already done everything that you are doing
Well the two of us, well we must be
A great temptation to have even started
Well don’t you know, as you walk on by
That great temptations never really die

Well I talked to my famous friend last night
My third day up well, his second nighter
He says I don’t know how you do what you do how do you
    Let the world in
Well I say well there’s no way out
Then I just play out the game
Well the two of us Widow and a Dove

Who in the world do you think that you are fooling
Well I’ve already done everything that you are doing
Well the two of us, well we must be
A great temptation to have even started
Well don’t you know, as you walk on by
That great temptations never really die

    Ooh the two of us
Estranged sometimes for their very survival
Outraged at each other engaged to each other in their hearts
    But they live apart

    Two kinds of love
One for the way you walk
One for the way you love me
    You’re a great temptation

    Two kinds of love
One for the way you walk
One for the way you love me
Two kinds of love great temptation

    Juliet

“Juliet” is Track 10 on The Other Side of the Mirror (1989), Stevie Nicks‘ fourth solo album. It follows “Alice” and precedes “Doing the Best I Can (Escape from Berlin)” in the album track order.

    About ‘Juliet’

“Juliet” first surfaced as the instrumental track “Book of Miracles,” b-side of Fleetwood Mac’s “Seven Wonders” single (1987). A more complete version of “Juliet” (Run-Through) appeared on the Deluxe Edition (1987) of Tango in the Night.

In 1989, Stevie confirmed that “Juliet” and “Books of Miracles” were “the same song” (Coburn, 1989).

    Lyrics

    It was way too hard
    It was way too tough
On this she had not bargained
But she was like some missionary
Dancing to the beat of some man’s ancient drum

And she tries hard to tell this story
But it’s a hard one to tell
She consults her book of miracles

Cry and the wind says fly on
Well, now you’re on your own
You’re back out on the road again for a million reasons
Well, you’re back out on the road again

And you try to tie together some connections
You get some ribbons and some bows
And get back out on the road again

So you found a queen without a king
Oh yes, and everyone here loved her
    No one was wrong

But you’re a little bit like her
You’re just a little bit like her
    A little bit like her
    A little bit like Juliet

Turn to the blue crystal mirror
Well as always it is truthful
Oh, well you see it in the reflection of the real blue lamp
    Well, tie the connection
Get some ribbons and some bows
Get back out on the road

    But when they were good
    They were really good
    Really good, stranger

So you found a queen without a king
Oh yes, and everyone here loved her
    No one was wrong

You’re a little bit like her
You’re just a little bit like her
    A little bit like her
    A little bit like Juliet

Let the crisis become a bridge
    And cross that bridge tomorrow
Well, let the time that goes between, baby
Well, let it let go of the sorrow

She says, “the sky is crying,” he says, “no, the sky is blue”
He says, “the sky is not crying,” he says, “the sky is blue”
She says, “the sky is crying,” he says, “the sky is blue”
    Can you get into that?

    The sky is crying
He says, “no, the sky is blue”
And can you get into that?
    Can you get into that?
She says, “the sky is crying,” he says, “the sky is blue”

  • Ooh My Love

    Ooh My Love

“Ooh My Love” is Track 4 on The Other Side of the Mirror (1989), Stevie Nicks’ fourth solo album. It follows “Two Kinds of Love” and precedes “Ghosts” in the running order.

    About ‘Ooh My Love’

In the 2012 In Your Dreams documentary, Stevie revealed that she inadvertently “stole” an instrumental track composed by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ guitarist Michael Campbell. Petty intended to use the track for “Runaway Trains” from his 1987 album Let Me Up (I’ve Had Enough). Stevie took a cassette tape labeled “24 Demos from Mike Campbell” from Petty’s house, thinking they were for her because he had often sent her instrumental tracks.

Stevie paired her lyrics for “Ooh My Love” with Petty’s “Running Trains” backing track, which Fleetwood Mac rehearsed during the Tango in the Night recording sessions, unaware she had used Petty’s track. When Stevie later played Fleetwood Mac’s version for Petty, he was furious and refused to let her use the track.” It was my biggest bust of my entire life,” she said in the documentary (Stewart & Nicks, 2012).

In 2019, Stevie elaborated on this story in a Rolling Stone interview.

“I stole [the backing track] from Tom Petty — accidentally! I picked up the wrong cassette at Tom’s one night, a tape of Mike Campbell’s instrumental demos. Tom would get them first, and then the ones he didn’t want, Mike sent them to me. I accidentally arrived home one night with a cassette — I thought it was mine, but it was Tom’s. It just said, “24 Demos from Mike Campbell.” It had the song that inspired “Ooh My Love,” which became “Runaway Trains” for Tom. I took it into Fleetwood Mac and sang my lyrics over it. We started to record. I loved it so much, I called Tom and said, “Listen to this!” What an idiot, right? Let’s play him the song you stole over the phone! Tom just starts screaming at me on the other end of the phone. I’m realizing, “How stupid are you, Stevie?” So I had to go in the next day and tell Fleetwood Mac, “Guess what, we can’t do this song. ” “Why can’t we do it? ” “Because I stole it from Tom Petty, and I’m absolutely a total criminal and a thief” (Sheffield, 2019).

The elusive Fleetwood Mac demo of “Ooh My Love” appears on the Deluxe Edition (2017) of Tango in the Night.

“These are the ups and downs of being friends with other songwriters,” Stevie explained. “Way later, years down the road, I sat down at the piano and tried to recall it. I wrote ‘Ooh My Love’ on the piano: ‘In the shadow of the castle walls …’ Of course, I don’t know near as many chords as Mike Campbell does. All I remembered was that distant enchanted melody.” (Sheffield, 2019).

In 2019, Rolling Stone writer Rob Sheffield wrote about “Stevie Nicks’ lost masterpiece ‘Ooh My Love.’”

    Lyrics

In the shadow of the castle walls
    Wherever those walls were
Well you used to love to be behind those walls with her
    Within these walls
Well he watched from the corridor
Watched from the corner of his eyes
    Seemingly waiting for the time
When the castle walls would all fall down

Yes it was a strain on her
    Watching her castles fall down
Oh but there was a time when he called her angel
Where in the world did you come from?

In the shadow of the castle walls
    Wherever those walls were
In this land or in that land
Well the castles all seem to belong to her
And all this talk about love and hate
And our separation way on down the line
Well they just can’t wait, can they?
    No they just can’t wait

Yes it was a strain on her
    Watching her castles fall down
Oh but there was a time when he called her angel
Where in the world did you come from?
Yes it was a strain on her
    Watching her castles fall down
Oh but there was a time when he called her angel
Where in the world did you come from?

There was a light that lighted the way to the chamber
Where they spent all their time, well
There was a light that lighted the way to the chamber door where
They seemed to spend all their time

Ooh my love Ooh my love Ooh my love

Yes it was a strain on her
    Watching her castles fall down
Oh but there was a time when he called her angel
Where in the world did you come from?
Yes it was a strain on her
    Watching her castles fall down
Oh but there was a time when he called her angel
Where in the world did you come from?
Yeah it was a strain on her
    Watching her castles fall down
Hey, hey, baby No one can take you away from me no no one
In the shadow of the castle walls

  • Cry Wolf

    Cry Wolf

    Lyrics

    You couldn’t wait for answers
You just had to try those wings
    And all your happy-ever-afters
    They didn’t mean a thing
So I’m not gonna try at all
To keep you from the flame
Just remember not to call my name

    When you cry wolf
    Once too often
    You cry wolf
    No, I won’t come knockin’
    You cry wolf
    I won’t hear you anymore

    If you start to stumble
    If you start to crack
    If you’re feeling humble
    Don’t look back

    When you cry wolf
    Once too often
    You cry wolf
    No, I won’t come knockin’
    You cry wolf
    I won’t hear you anymore

You can try, but you can’t get me
    Into the fire
‘Cause I’m all out of sympathy
And, baby, I can’t walk this wire

    Find yourself somebody new
To catch you when you fall
‘Cause I got just one thing to say to you
    And, baby, that’s all

    When you cry wolf
    Once too often
    You cry wolf
    No, I won’t come knockin’
    You cry wolf
    I won’t hear you
    You cry wolf
    Well, once too often
    You cry wolf
    No, I won’t come knockin’
    You cry wolf
    I won’t see you
    So you cry wolf
    Once too often
    Cry wolf
Oh no, I won’t come knockin’
    If you cry wolf
    I won’t see you
    ‘Cause you cried wolf
