  • Stevie Nicks Discusses 'In Your Dreams' Documentary: Watch Exclusive Clip

“It’s a magical little film,” Nicks tells Billboard about the making of her 2011 solo album.

    By Gary Graff
    Billboard
    Friday, March 29, 2013

Stevie Nicks says that making her latest solo album, 2011’s In Your Dreams, was “the best year of my life.” And she’s even happier to have it chronicled on film.

Directed by David A. Stewart, the former Eurythmics member who co-produced and co-wrote the album, the In Your Dreams documentary will be shown for one night only on April 2 in North American theaters; locations and ticket information can be found at www.inyourdreamsmovie.com. This follows showings at several film festivals during 2011 and 2012, most recently at the South By Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas, where Nicks also performed with Dave Grohl’s Sound City Players.

“It’s a magical little film,” Nicks tells Billboard. “It really allows you to sit right there with us through the entire year of the making of In Your Dreams, and it’s funny. It’s really funny. It’s really compassionate and it’s at my house for a whole year. Dave’s team during 2011 took it down from a whole year to three hours and myself, my assistant and Dave’s editor took it down from there to an hour and 40 (minutes). It shows how hard it was to make (the album) and also how much fun it was and how magical it was. I hope that when people see it they really want to hear the record, even if they didn’t know I had a record out.” In Your Dreams debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 in May of 2011 and has sold 188,000 copies to date, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

As the film’s promotional description notes, In Your Dreams documents “costume parties, joyous dinner feasts, tap dancing, fantasy creations, and revealing songwriting and recording sessions all of which are captured on film.” Mick Fleetwood, actress Reese Witherspoon, Mike Campbell of Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers, co-producer Glen Ballard and longtime Nicks cohort Waddy Wachtel also appear in the movie, as does former boyfriend Lindsey Buckingham. The session that produced the song “Soldier’s Angel,” which was inspired by Nicks’ periodic visits to wounded U.S. military personnel at hospitals on the East Coast, is also chronicled.

“I told (Buckingham) the story of the song and said, ‘If you can’t figure it out, it’s not going to go on the record and I’m going to be destroyed because this is truly my most sacred and revered song,’ “Nicks recalls. “He really saved the day on that; not only did we create something that’s probably as Buckingham-Nicks as we have been since 1973, but…it really brought Lindsey and I back together. As he was leaving on the second day he said, ‘I feel like we’re closer than we’ve been in 30 years, and I would not mess with that for anything. I’m so happy we have been able to do this song and make it something we love, because I know that’s so important to you.’”

Nickswho kicks off a tour with Fleetwood Mac on April 4 in Columbus, Ohiowill also be taking the In Your Dreams film to the Toronto International Film Festival, with a screening and Q&A on April 15. “These are so crazy for me because I’ve never been to a film festival in my life before this,” she says. “So that was really an interesting experience for me to go to a real theater and do a question-and-answer, and then see the film and then do another question-and-answer. It was great. And, of course, I just love doing anything that allows me to hang out with Dave Stewart, ‘cause he just makes me laugh from the bottom of my feet up.”

NEW YORK, March 11, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Following the tremendous positive response to the Stevie Nicks documentary In Your Dreams, an intimate portrait of one of rock’s most enduring and legendary artists, at the Hamptons International Film Festival and the Mill Valley Film Festival, this up close portrayal of Nicks recording her critically acclaimed In Your Dreams CD in collaboration with Dave Stewart is now scheduled to screen in over 50 theaters across North America on April 2nd. Tickets will be available on www.inyourdreamsmovie.com once they go on sale. A current schedule of cities and theaters follows this release, with more cities to be added.

2011-fwiw2The In Your Dreams film is being distributed by Abamorama. Co-produced and co-directed by former Eurythmic Dave Stewart, In Your Dreams is a portrait of the elusive Nicks as she and Stewart embark on a musical journey to write and record the critically acclaimed album In Your Dreams. Nicks called this “the greatest year of my life” and felt compelled to share the joyful experience that she terms “the day the circus came to town” with her fans. The record was co-written by Nicks and Stewart and produced by Stewart and Glen Ballard. Watch the trailer at www.inyourdreamsmovie.com or the bottom of this page.

2009-moonlight20Nicks, one of the lead singers and emotional catalyst for Fleetwood Mac, is embarking on a world tour with them beginning April 4th in Columbus Ohio. A multi-Grammy-Award-winning artist and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Nicks allowed cameras inside her magical old mansion high atop the hills of LA with a wild cast of musicians and friends.  The inner life of the legendary Nicks has by her design long been kept at a distance from the public. We learn in Dreams that her world features, costume parties, elaborate dinner feasts, tap dancing, fantasy creations and revealing songwriting and recording sessions all of which are captured on film. Also cameos by Edgar Allan Poe, Mick Fleetwood, Reese Witherspoon, a massive white stallion in the backyard, owls and naturally a few vampires who appear in several “home movie” style music videos.

2009-cheaper9Along with tracking the Nicks/Stewart creative partnership, In Your Dreams has plenty of other cinematic payoffs including rare never before seen personal scrapbook stills from Nicks’ childhood and family life, and a wealth of candid backstage and performance shots taken over the last 35 years. The documentary was produced by Dave Stewart’s production company, Weapons of Mass Entertainment.

Nicks, who has sold millions of records as a solo artist and writer of such iconic songs as “Landslide,” “Gold Dust Woman” and “Edge of 17,” is regularly cited by stars as diverse as Taylor Swift, Kid Rock, Courtney Love, Sheryl Crow, The Dixie Chicks and John Mayer as an iconic favorite and heroine and is a continuous inspiration to the world’s top fashion designers.

2009-cheaper24“She is really real. It doesn’t matter if she is singing in the make-up room or in the middle of a TV interview.  She is who she is, and she doesn’t change,” commented Stewart.

“This is our baby and we give her lovingly into your dreams. From our tribe to yours,” concluded Nicks.

At 64 years old, Stevie Nicks is a steadfast embodiment of the rock goddess persona that developed almost overnight in 1975, a living example that female empowerment still has a leg to stand on.

Preparing for a spring tour with Fleetwood Mac and releasing documentary In Your Dreams (which chronicles the creation of her 2011 album of the same title), Nicks sat down for an intimate interview with NPR’s Ann Powers as part of the SXSW Music programming.

What began as the linear talk of an unparalleled career manifested into a magical hour where stardom wasn’t the theme. She spoke candidly about her rise to fame, but it was Nicks’ balance of elegance and empowerment that took center stage.

After explaining how she and partner Lindsey Buckingham rose to fame with Fleetwood Mac (the two joined in January 1975 and “together were a millionaire” by October), Nicks spoke of the gender equality she fought for early in her career. From the onset, Nicks insisted that she and Christine McVie, her Fleetwood Mac counterpart, be treated as equals, not dismissed due to frail figures or softer voices.

“We have to walk in with a big attitude,” Nicks recalled. “We have to flow in like goddesses.”

This dichotomy of attitude and goddess is a continuous theme in Nicks’ career, the physical manifestation of which can be seen each time she performs. Nicks called her onstage persona an amalgamation of three rock and roll greats: Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Grace Slick (Jefferson Airplane).

From Joplin, she adopted the rock and roll attitude. “When she walked on that stage, she was a knockout and she was a hard rock singer and she could hold that audience in her hand.” From Hendrix, it was softness. “He was the opposite of Janis.” He was “super humble” and “super graceful.”

“I got a little bit of slinky from Grace Slick,” she continued. “I try to be as elegant as I can,” she said, noting that the “masculine side comes through also.” “You try to find a nice way to blend them all.”

That blend translates to the celebrated solo career that Nicks has balanced since the release of 1981’s Bella Donna. The process of creating solo work has been a necessary “vehicle,” for Nicks, a way to produce the “trunk full of songs” she’s carried around since 1973, without leaving Fleetwood Mac behind.

“I love my band. I would never break up Fleetwood Mac ever,” she said. “I just take the time in between — I just take their vacations [to do solo albums].”

As a solo artist and member of one of the most influential bands of all time, Nicks has written and performed some of rock’s most identifiable songs (“Landslide,” “Rhiannon,” “Edge of Seventeen”). “I live for those moments,” she said of fans identifying with her stories.

“It’s something that I feel it’s my job, it’s my duty to actually share that with all of you guys,” she said. “I want to be a teacher.”

Perhaps Nicks’ most poignant teaching moment at SXSW came at the end of her scheduled appearance when a young audience member asked for the singer’s opinion about the current role of women in society.

“I see women being put really back in their place. And I hate it,” Nicks said. “We’re losing what we fought so hard for.”

“I feel that women aren’t getting much support now,” Nicks continued, questioning what’s causing modern women to “back off.”

Her final thought on the matter was delivered in terse, empowering rock goddess form. “All I can say to that question is don’t.”

AUSTIN – Stevie Nicks name dropped Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Grace Slick during her SXSW Interview Thursday afternoon with moderator Ann Powers of NPR. From Joplin, she got the flamboyance and the attitude. Hendrix gave her humility and grace. Slick provided the slinky elegance.

“Those are the three people that I emulated for who I was going to be onstage,” said Nicks in her trademark black attire and dark sunglasses as she sat inside the Austin Convention Center.

Nicks, in her trademark black, talked about her career for an hour (Ashley Landis/Special Contributor)
Nicks, in her trademark black, talked about her career for an hour (Ashley Landis)

She wanted to mix feminine and masculine attributes without forgetting to be elegant. For an hour Nicks conversed with Powers as a packed room watched and listened attentively. The legendary female rocker, one of the most influential women in music of the last four decades, has been especially visible in the last two years. Her 2011 solo effort In Your Dreams spawned a tour that stopped at Verizon Theatre in Grand Prairie. She also has a documentary of the same name that chronicles the recording of the majestic disc with producer Dave Stewart. Plus, she’s in SXSW keynote speaker Dave Grohl’s labor-of-love documentary Sound City: Real to Reel.

But the gist of the Nicks interview was historical. She talked about Fleetwood Mac, naturally, particularly about the harmonious artistic blend of Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and herself. There were each intent on harmony, working diligently to develop the three-part harmony that characterized the modern-day Mac sound. They each approached songwriting differently, which in turn proved mutually complimentary. There was plenty of time devoted to her solo career, particularly her pivotal solo debut 1981′s Bella Donna. Nicks approached her solo album as a way to give a home to her compositions that didn’t fit the group dynamics. But she admits that her band mates were nervous that she’d find success alone and then exit stage left.

“They were so terrified that I would do that record and then I would quit,” she said. “I really had to convince them that I’m not going anywhere.”

She’s still with Fleetwood Mac 32 years later. The band comes to Dallas’ American Airlines Center June 4. And what’s the secret of Nicks’ longevity, the magic potion that keeps her voice sturdy after nightly abuse during the heady ’70s and ’80s? Vocal exercises. She demonstrated by doing nonsensical vocalizations that sounded like on-pitch baby gurgling.

Even elegant rockers need to keep training.
