    Taken by the wind

The story behind the photographs of Stevie Nicks with veils on the roof of her house in Venice Beach, 1981

Stevie Nicks from Fleetwood Mac stands in the ocean breeze with her trademark flowy dress sleeves rippling dramatically over her head.

According to Preston, the wind was so strong, one of his assistants literally had to hold Stevie down by her boots. “She was living in Venice, California, at the time and she had a condo on the top floor of a six-story building right on the sand in Venice Beach and we had a great shoot, she couldn’t have been easier. But I still wanted that one last killer photograph and I said almost at the same time as she said: ‘Why don’t we go up on the roof and shoot as the sun is going down?’ I thought it was a fantastic idea.

“She had put on this white outfit with long sleeves of fabric that really caught the wind like a sail on a sailboat. The second I put the camera to my eye the wind starts kicking up. She is posing and the sleeves are going all over the place, and I realize about three frames in that the wind is going to be blowing so hard that one gust and she could be blown right off the side of the building, six stories down, which would have ruined Time Life’s insurance department’s day.

“There was only one thing to do because we were getting great photos and the sun waits for no man and it was going down. So I made an assistant of mine lie on his stomach out of frame, and I said ‘You hold on to that white boot — you do not let go.’ And that is what he did. She stayed in one place and we got great pictures. But that is why you don’t see her boots in the pictures. There could be no full-length shot.”

Preston grew up in Queens, New York. He went to Forest Hills High, the same school that spawned The Ramones. He was already photographing bands and set to go to the Philadelphia College of Art when he realized the career he had chosen didn’t need a degree.

“The day was absolutely intoxicating, and the next afternoon a bouquet of flowers arrived at my house with a note thanking me for a ‘magical shoot.’ She’s a friend for life and one of the most creative people I’ve ever met.”

  • Rock a Little reissue in the works?

Rock a Little reissue in the works?

On Wednesday, Stevie Nicks Rock a LittleRhino cryptically tweeted “We are always listening and we love you,” along with a picture of a white jacket donning the Rock a Little album branding on the backside. Could Rhino have a much-anticipated Rock a Little reissue up their sleeve?

If we’re keeping score, Rock a Little is Stevie Nicks‘ third best-selling solo album in the U.S., behind Bella Donna and The Wild Heart, selling more than 1 million copies back in 1985. So if we’re talking about the bottom line, it would make perfect financial sense for Rhino to issue a deluxe package of this bestseller. A hot-pink vinyl edition would be everything!

At the time, Rock a Little had become Stevie’s most expensive recording taking more than a year to complete, so there’s certain to be a treasure trove of unreleased material beyond the few crumbs that have been commercially issued so far (“Reconsider Me, “Mirror Mirror”).

The Rock a Little album itself was quite the ’80s energy bomb. Side 1 kicked off with the frenetic “I Can’t Wait,” which exploded like sonic confetti of beat-boxes, guitar solos, and layered vocals. The rock-and-roll ballerina Lily hit the stage in the album title track, while the lovely “Sister Honey” took you fast like a jet plane and star stream, arriving at the fabulous “Imperial Hotel,” where you can sit across the glass table, same glass table. Stevie created some eye-catching visuals here.

Stevie kept the energy level high on Side 2, while exploring darker themes. She was imprisoned in “The Nightmare” and then discreetly invited her lover to “come around tonight indecent” in the rock anthem “No Spoken Word.” (Only Stevie can describe horniness in the classiest way possible.) And who could not be moved by her now-classic, mournful ballad “Has Anyone Ever Written Anything for You”?

Sharon Celani, Lori Nicks, Stevie Nicks
Sharon Celani, Lori (Perry) Nicks, Stevie Nicks

Rock a Little came out at the height of “The Big ’80s” — partying at its most decadent. In Stevie’s case, there were fabulously over-the-top music videos (for “Talk to Me” and “I Can’t Wait”), bold hairstyles and outfits (see the big black ball gown on the album cover), and the notoriously wild Rock a Little Tour that sent Stevie straight to Betty Ford afterward! Needless to say, our girl had a good time.

After being deprived of concerts and other entertainment for a year, what would be better than a Big ’80s Rock a Little reissue? Please God, show them (Rhino) the way to the Bella-Donna-The-Wild-Heart-Rock-a-Little trifecta!

  • Stevie is fully vaccinated!

    Stevie is fully vaccinated!

Stevie Nicks is fully vaccinated! On Monday, Stevie did her part to encourage others to get the COVID-19 vaccination by sharing that she was “proud to be part of 29% of fully-vaccinated Americans!” She has also been responsibly wearing her mask when out and about for essential tasks, like getting an eye exam back in July 2020.

The objective of all this is “herd immunity” against the COVID-19 coronavirus, which is reached when enough people in the population have recovered from a disease and have developed protective antibodies against future infection, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Basically, that means life can start to return to normal, and we can resume fun activities, like going to a Stevie Nicks concert! So follow Stevie’s lead and get fully vaccinated!

“Then and now, FLEETWOOD MAC LIVE artfully marks a fascinating time period for a group that, in one form or another, has been on the global stage for more than half a century… It’s a wildly entertaining rock ’n’ roll circus in full swing under a big tent of the band’s own creation as they leave audiences dazzled in locales from Paris, France, to Passaic, New Jersey.” – David Wild

When Fleetwood Mac released its first live album in December 1980, it captured the legendary band’s most iconic lineup on stage demonstrating the full scope of their collective, creative powers. Recorded mostly during the world tour for TUSK, FLEETWOOD MAC LIVE delivered a double-album’s worth of exhilarating performances that included massive hits like “Dreams” and “Go Your Own Way,” “Rhiannon,” and “Don’t Stop.”

On April 9th, we’re giving the band’s live debut a much-deserved encore with a new 3CD/2LP collection that features a remastered version of the original release on both 180-gram vinyl and CD, plus more than an hour of unreleased live music recorded between 1977 and 1982 on the third CD. The set also includes a bonus 7-inch single featuring previously unreleased demos for “Fireflies” and “One More Night.”
The majority of the original album was recorded live between 1979 and 1980, save for a few exceptions: “Don’t Let Me Down Again,” was recorded in 1975 during the tour for FLEETWOOD MAC; “Dreams” and “Don’t Stop” are from the band’s sound check in Paris; while “Fireflies,” “One More Night,” and a cover of the Beach Boys’ “Farmer’s Daughter” were all recorded in California during a special show for the band’s crew, family, and friends.

The 14 live tracks that debut on the SUPER DELUXE EDITION span a wider range of time than those on the original release. They include seven songs from the Tusk tour (1979-80), four from the Rumours tour (1977) and three from the Mirage tour (1982). These stellar additions include live versions of “Tusk,” “Gold Dust Woman,” and “Songbird,” plus “The Green Manalishi (With The Two-Pronged Crown)” – a song written in 1970 by guitarist Peter Green, who founded Fleetwood Mac with Mick Fleetwood and Jeremy Spencer in 1967.

A special TOUR EDITION is available for pre-order exclusively in the Rhino store. Limited to 1,000 copies, this one features the 3-CD/2-LP/7-inch collection plus replica ephemera from the era including a ticket, backstage pass, ad, button, sticker, and iron-on patch.

  • Stevie shares lessons learned from battling drugs, her own ego

Stevie shares lessons learned from battling drugs, her own ego

AMM Inspiration with Stevie Nicks: Finding encouragement from others who have faced their TRUTH

As most of us know, being grounded isn’t easy. It takes concentration, effort, and a sense of overall balance—in addition, it also takes time.

Beloved singer-songwriter Stevie Nicks wasn’t always grounded—she has faced much self-imposed adversity in her life and career. In fact, she advises, “people, especially young people, should know that ego can be just as dangerous as any drug.” It is our ego that often throws us off balance, as Nicks learned the hard way. However, we can learn a lot about how to find that grounding in our own lives, by hearing Nicks speak about her own experience.

Nicks has long been open about her personal struggles and heartbreak. Her music, both as a solo artist and as part of Fleetwood Mac, has chronicled her pain throughout her long career. Stevie remembers recording her first song, “I Loved and I’ve Lost,” on a cassette player on her fifteenth birthday. That song (sadly lost long ago) foreshadowed the tone of her turbulent life and songwriting career. The raw honesty that marks her deeply personal lyrics shows in her willingness to share some of the wisdom she’s gained along the way. No one can describe her journey better than Stevie Nicks herself. So here, in her own words, is Stevie’s story:

“A lot of people would expect me to say that drugs have been the biggest obstacle in my life. And in a way, it’s true. That’s because, like way too many people of my generation, I paid a very high price in my life for the drugs that I took. Cocaine was one of the great lies my generation fell for—and we fell hard. They told us that cocaine was a drug without consequence, but that turned out to be a very big and wildly destructive lie. I know because that particular lie cost me at least a million dollars and put a hole in my nose that could have killed me. Now if that wasn’t bad enough, cocaine use inflated our egos beyond reason—making it even more destructive.”

It is our ego that often throws us off balance.

“In the eighties, I fell for the lies regarding the drug Klonopin (clonazepam, a medication used to treat convulsive disorders and anxiety). That drug nearly brought me down when it was completely overprescribed to me. This tranquilizer not only caused me to lose weight, it actually resulted in me losing interest in my work. And that was a total disaster because it essentially stopped me from being me. After years of sacrifice to focus on creating the best music I could, I was suddenly tranquilized right out of being true to myself and my music.”

“But ultimately, the truth about drugs is how they are usually a symptom of an even bigger problem—in my case, an ego out of control. Sometimes the biggest and most dangerous lies are the ones we tell ourselves. With fame comes the danger of thinking that you are bigger and better than anyone else, and that you can live ‘above it all.’ Letting your ego get out of control can often bring you crashing back down to earth. Like a drug, your ego can stop you from listening to your true self.”

“My true self is someone who writes and sings songs. Then I get to perform those songs—bringing them alive for other people! It’s such an honor to be able to do that: to go around the world and see how your songs—your children in a way—are so deeply loved, understood, and appreciated by others who only know you through your words and music. Sometimes it feels like a lot of work, but ultimately it’s a privilege. Too many of us who have succeeded in the popular arts have somehow forgotten that.”

“So my best advice goes well beyond just staying away from drugs. Check your ego too! If you’re lucky enough to figure out what you are meant to do with your life, follow that passion. For me it was music, but I had to act on that passion to make my dreams come true.”

Fleetwood Mac, and Stevie’s prolific solo career, have produced over 50 hit songs and sold over 140 million albums. Along with her fellow Fleetwood Mac band members, Stevie was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. Stevie says it was one of her proudest moments.

Even though the journey wasn’t always easy, Stevie Nicks found success, balance, and learned to ground herself in her life and career. When someone has overcome great obstacles, we can learn a lot from their journey.

    STEVIE’S EMPOWERING THOUGHT

“If you’re lucky enough to figure out what you are meant to do with your life, follow that passion.”

    DO IT DAILY

    • Keep your feet firmly planted on the ground. Don’t let your ego run out of control and convince you that you’re better than anyone else.
    • Don’t be afraid of the tough decisions. Trust your instincts and listen to your heart, not to those things that distract you from your inner-voice!
