About the Song
Stevie Nicks recorded “Violet and Blue” for The Wild Heart, but it wasn’t included on the completed album. It ended up on the Against All Odds Motion Picture Soundtrack, released in June 1984, instead. An alternate version of the track played in the background during the movie’s nightclub scene.
The soundtrack earned a Grammy nomination for Best Album Of Original Score Written For A Motion Picture Or Television Special at the 27th Grammy Awards, held on February 26, 1985, . The award went to Purple Rain instead.
Stevie used some of her vocalizations from John Stewart’s “Midnight Wind” (1979) for “Violet and Blue.”
For many years after recording the track, Stevie add the lyric “Well, take your violet and blue mornings with you” to her live cover of Tom Petty’s “I Need to Know.”
