A new version of Stevie Nicks‘ haunting 1989 track “Doing the Best That I Can” (Arena Mix) will appear on the soundtrack for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. The track will be available with the soundtrack album on November 13, a week prior to the film’s release.
From Nicks’ fourth solo album The Other Side of the Mirror, the obscure track may seem like an odd choice for the film. But both capture the loss of personal agency under overwhelming external forces, where quiet perseverance becomes the ultimate form of survival. In “Doing the Best That I Can,” Nicks sings “I didn’t win or lose / I just threw the cards / But I paid a price for it / I was silent / I was locked away / But I covered my tears / Silent all day / It’s out of my hands here.” That certainly sounds like the plight of heroine Katniss Everdeen!
Premiering in theaters on November 20, the prequel stars Elle Fanning (Effie Trinket), Kieran Culkin (Caesar Flickerman), and Maya Hawke (Wiress) as younger versions of classic franchise characters. Ralph Fiennes joins the cast as President Snow, while Jennifer Lawrence and Woody Harrelson are set to return.
