    New Year’s Eve in Nashville

Keith Urban, Stevie Nicks, Ashley McBryde, Amanda Shires and Jason Isbell are among the highlights at Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park

With the help of a few noisemaking friends — a few hundred thousand onlookers — Keith Urban roared with Nashville into a new decade.

“This is our roaring ’20s, for the next 10 years” proclaimed Urban, headliner of the annual Music City Midnight concert at Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park.

More than an estimated 200,000 people joined Urban, Jason Isbell, Stevie Nicks and others at the annual New Year’s Eve concert, Nashville Convention & Visitors Corporation said early Wednesday. In its fourth year at Bicentennial Mall, the record-breaking attendance tops 2018 crowd estimates of about 175,000.

And those attending, or those watching live look-in shots on CNN or NBC, caught a show packed with a year supply of only-in-Nashville moments. A few highlights …

    Edge of 2020

Urban wrapped 2019 by collaborating with two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame icon Stevie Nicks, who joined the show lineup last week. The pair teamed for a performance of classic Nicks and Tom Petty duet “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” and Fleetwood Mac cut “Second Hand News” before welcoming the new year with fireworks and 100 pounds (literally) of confetti.

After midnight, Nicks returned for an “Edge of 17” encore performance with Urban and company.

“This feels like the beginning of a damn fine year,” Urban said. “Stevie Nicks just joined our band.”

She wouldn’t be the only special guest during his set, either. Can’t-miss country upstart Ashley McBryde joined the band for a performance of her Grammy Award-nominated song “Girl Goin’ Nowhere” and a cover of Wynonna Judd’s “Nowhere Else on Earth.”

“There’s only one song I could think to close out my 2019,” McBryde said, kicking into “Nowhere Else …”.

    A Star is 2019

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s hit flick “A Star Is Born” made a Nashville cameo Tuesday night, thanks to Americana favorite Jason Isbell and his band The 400 Unit.

Alongside songs familiar (“24 Frames,” “Super 8”) and new (“Overseas,” off an upcoming LP), Isbell tapped into “Last of My Kind,” a track penned for the 2018 musical melodrama that continues to catch award show buzz.

“I wrote (this song) for Bradley Cooper to sing in that movie,” Isbell said. “I never heard him sing before so I was terrified. Normally someone that good lookin’ can’t sing worth a damn, but I was wrong. He did a good job.”

Isbell offered “Maybe It’s Time” during a smooth set of his welcoming rock and folk-tinged storytelling. His eight-song outing included the howling closer “Never Gonna Change” and a stirring rendition of “Cover Me Up,” the latter catching headlines this season for cover versions bubbling into mainstream country.

“A lot of people like to sing (“Cover Me Up”) and they do a good job … but I made it up my damn self in my bedroom on Priest Lake,” Isbell said, noting he wrote the heartfelt love story for bandmate-wife Amanda Shires.

    A remembrance medley

Urban’s set continued a makeshift New Year’s Eve tradition — launched during his tenure as Music City Midnight headliner — of paying homage to songwriters who died in the previous year.

He performed a seven-minute medley honoring The Cars’ Ric Ocasek with “My Best Friend’s Girl” and “You Might Think,” The Monkees’ Peter Tork with “I’m A Believer,” Cream’s Ginger Baker with “Sunshine of Your Love,” Roxette singer Marie Fredriksson with “It Must Have Been Love” and more.

The Struts kick down the year

A rare out-of-towner on the New Year’s Eve bill, transatlantic rock torchbearer The Struts shot a jolt of amplified energy into the concert ground.

Accurately described by show emcee Storme Warren as equal parts Freddie Mercury and Tim Curry, band frontman Luke Spiller dished a gooey dose of rock ‘n’ roll bombast during the set.

The British outfit spun, jumped, danced and led park-sized singalongs to neo-glam anthems such as “Could Have Been Me” and “One Night Only.” The Struts scored a bit of help from Urban, too, who hopped on stage for a cover of The Rolling Stones’ “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” and a jam of new Struts original “Low Key In Love.”

    Break out the Shires

Prior to The Struts, essential Nashville songwriter Amanda Shires kicked off her solo set with fitting 2018 number “Break Out The Champagne.”

Her set — anchored by songs off the excellent 2018 LP “To the Sunset,” such as the vibrant opener “Parking Lot Pariouette” — teased what Shires hopes 2020 brings for her other project: vital country supergroup The Highwomen. The group features Shires, Maren Morris, Brandi Carlile and Natalie Hemby.

Shires performed “Highwomen” and “Don’t Call Me,” both off the group’s acclaimed debut.

“One of my New Year’s resolutions is for us to go on tour,” she said.

ROCK LEGEND STEVIE NICKS TO APPEAR AS SPECIAL GUEST AT ‘MUSIC CITY MIDNIGHT’

Fleetwood Mac Vocalist to Perform with Headliner Keith Urban to Ring in 2020.

NASHVILLE – Rock legend and successful solo artist Stevie Nicks, member of one of the world’s best-selling bands Fleetwood Mac, will appear as a special guest with headliner Keith Urban at Nashville’s Music City Midnight concert, the Nashville Convention & Visitors Corp announced today.

The Jack Daniel’s Music City Midnight: New Year’s Eve in Nashville event on Tuesday, Dec. 31 will feature a Music Note Drop at midnight, headliner Keith Urban, a multi-genre concert lineup of Nashville-based talent and live coverage on “NBC’s New Year’s Eve 2020” and CNN’s “New Year’s Eve Live with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen.” This is the eleventh annual celebration and the fourth year at Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park.

“To have someone of the caliber and stature of Stevie Nicks join Keith Urban on stage is an incredible way to cap off the year,” said Mayor John Cooper. “Nashville has worked hard to grow New Year’s Eve into a world-class event that brings global attention and economic impact to the city. Considering the evening’s diverse lineup, national broadcast coverage, and the addition of a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame artist to the program, it’s clear that these efforts are working.”

Also joining the lineup with 2018 CMA Entertainer of the Year and GRAMMY-winner Urban are special guest Ashley McBryde, the reigning Academy of Country Music New Female Artist of the Year and CMA New Artist of the Year; Americana powerhouse Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit; English rock band The Struts; Americana award winner Amanda Shires, who is also a member of The 400 Unit and critically-acclaimed new band The Highwomen; rising star Bren Joy; country artist Kalie Shorr, who was named to The New York Times Best Albums of 2019 list; the Fisk Jubilee Singers; and GRAMMY-winner DJ Dave Audé. The concert is free and open to the public.

Last year’s record New Year’s Eve event generated an all-time high $23 million in direct visitor spending over 2017’s $22.3 million. Attendance also broke records with 175,000 to 200,000, exceeding the previous record in 2015 of 150,000.

Gates at Bicentennial Mall will open at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 31 with DJ Case Bloom providing entertainment before the Music Note is raised. The Fisk Jubilee Singers, an ensemble of students from Fisk University, will kick off the live music with a selection of spiritual music. The show’s highlight will be the traditional Music Note Drop and accompanying fireworks display to usher in the New Year. GRAMMY-winner DJ Dave Audé also will be part of the lineup.

The returning Music City Gold Circle Party includes exclusive concert viewing area, food and beverage, indoor/outdoor party space, custom party favors and more. This VIP experience has limited tickets left.

  • Why I Love My Dog, Lily

Why I Love My Dog, Lily

    By Stevie Nicks.

My dog, Lily, is something else. I started looking for a dog about three and a half years ago, and when I first saw a picture of her online, she looked so cute, like a little tree fairy. I immediately got on a plane to Houston to meet her. Sitting there on the floor in the midst of a litter of Chinese crested puppies, I knew she was the one. I went through every possible name you could imagine, and then I came up with Lily because it made me think of an old chanteuse or a sophisticated actress. Her personality actually reminds me a lot of Marilyn Monroe’s. Lily has super-beautiful waist-length white hair and long pink eyelashes. She’s dramatic too; she loves everybody—but only to a point. When she’s not in good humor, she’ll go curl up somewhere where nobody can find her. I think she’s taken on some of my idiosyncrasies because I’m the exact same way. We like to go off by ourselves, and now we do it together.

Lily has been on the road with me for most of her life, and she loves it because she gets so much attention. On the day of a show, she stays with me most of the time. She especially loves being there for my vocal warm-up. I even made up a blues song that I sing to her when it’s time for her to eat. So far she hasn’t gone onstage with me, but I’ll bring her out one day. She already knows all of my rock-star friends—Sheryl Crow, Harry Styles, Chris Isaak. Chris draws hysterical pictures of her. She brings so much joy to the entire Fleetwood Mac team, from the band to the people who do the rigging to the caterers. They all come backstage to see Lily because when there’s no dog, there’s no joy. After each show we get on a plane to go to the next city. We always fly private, and she prefers a G4 jet because it’s easier for her to run up and down the aisle. When we stay in nice hotels, she knows the one rule is she can’t pee on the Persian carpets or we’ll be banished. Sometimes I have to remind her of that. When we do get a break from touring, we go home to our condo in California. I always say if you’re not married and you don’t have kids or live in a commune with other people, then you’d better have a dog. I never feel lonely because she follows me around and keeps me laughing with all the goofy things she does. With Lily there, I always feel good.

Stevie reflects on Sheryl Crow’s ‘Redemption Day,’ Johnny Cash

Stevie Nicks took to social media to share her thoughts on deep cut ‘Redemption Day’ from Sheryl Crow’s Threads and the Johnny Cash connection

Stevie shared her thoughts on Sheryl Crow‘s “Redemption Day” (from Threads), a song that Crow originally recorded for her self-titled 1996 album. Johnny Cash covered the song in 2003 shortly before his death; the song was posthumously released on his 2010 album American VI: Ain’t No Grave.

The Threads version is a duet that melds together Cash’s vocal (from his cover) with Crow’s. Stevie sang Cash’s part during their performance of “Redemption Day” on the Wednesday episode of The Ellen Show. In her post, Stevie revealed how the recording brought her tears, crying “all the way through it.”

Social Media Transcript of Stevie’s Comments

    December 4, 2019

Last month I got a call from my old friend Sheryl Crow’s team to ask if I would come and do “Prove You Wrong” on the Ellen Show~ and if so, was there anything else I would like to do, I was on the road and finishing up the Fleetwood Mac tour ~ and can I just say, more tired than I have ever been – in my life ~
    But-
I sat down with her new album and came upon a song called “Redemption Day” ~ that I was later to find out ~ was not new ~ it was written in 1996 and for this version, she had pulled Johnny Cash’s vocal resulting in a heart wrenching duet that could have been written today. I cried all the way thru it.

I started learning it on the road ~ I would sing Johnny Cash’s part ~ I called her, sang it over the phone – (in tears) and said ~ I’m in ~ I will override my tiredness and do all of your shows so we can bring this song to the world…I think it says what I need to say ~ about our world today. I think our friend, Bob Dylan, would be proud to hear this song that so beautifully explains what’s going on now ~

Sheryl Crow is a master songwriter ~ and I am honored to help her bring this song to the world ~ I deeply wish that Johnny Cash was still here to sing it with us ~ but, he is singing it now on her new record ~

Thank you, Ellen, for letting us sing it yesterday on your show. Tonight we will sing it at the Ace Theatre in Los Angeles ~ and tomorrow we will sing it for Jimmy Kimmel ~

    It breaks my heart ~
And gives me hope ~ at the same time…
    Get this record
    Do it for the world…
