The Wild Heart @ 30: ‘Wild…in the darkest places of your mind’

Stevie NicksEarlier this year, Stevie Nicks’ second solo album The Wild Heart turned 30. To celebrate this milestone, Stevie Nicks INFO looks back on each unique track that inspired the recording and captivated listeners around the world.

By 1983, Stevie had established a formidable presence in rock music as a solo artist. Pressure to repeat the massive commercial success of her debut album Bella Donna was high. For her sophomoric work, Stevie balanced the pop rock sensibilities of Bella Donna but took on a harder edge, the darker melodies and instrumentation found on Side 2 of The Wild Heart. Straightforward pop rock songs like “Stand Back,” “If Anyone Falls,” and “Enchanted” maintained her core audience, while deeper cuts like “Sable on Blond” and “Beauty and the Beast” explored Stevie’ interest in mystics and fairy tales.

While not as cohesive a work as her debut piece, The Wild Heart thrives in unconventional ways. Listeners experience a fascinating mystery of sorts, left to decipher the meaning of Stevie’ cryptic, but engaging prose that reveals just enough personal details to hook the listener. These are unrestrained creative moments that reflect Stevie’ willingness to gamble for the sake of her craft and entice listeners to read between her lines.

    The Wild Heart 1983Wild Heart

The Wild Heart begins with the standout title track, Stevie’ six-minute opus that explores the “darkest places of your mind.” The music from the original demo may have been inspired by the music from Lindsey Buckingham’s 1982 demo “Can’t Go Back,” which was later recorded for Fleetwood Mac album Mirage. Stevie can be heard singing lines from “Wild Heart” to  the music of “Can’t Go Back” in the clip below.

“It was born in New York, and it’s just intense,” says Stevie of the opening title track. “There are some wild words in it that just sort of popped up. I think that people are gonna love ‘Wild Heart.’ It’s the one song that I go back to time to time again and listen to. There’s something about the vocal that just gives me shivers because it’s just so real. People will understand that, probably more than a lot of other things, because it definitely takes you through your nervous breakdown and through your recovery, and it takes you through your survival. And everybody’s heart is wild, so it’s not like I’ve got any kind of hold on it, ’cause this entire album was written for everybody and their wild heart. This was very much meant to be shared and given to people to have them just love the idea that they have wild hearts ’cause I love that — I love that.”

    Lyrics

Something in my heart died last night
Just one more chip off an already broken heart
I think the heart broke long ago
    That’s when I needed you
    When I needed you most
    That’s when I needed you
    When I needed you most

Well, I run around like a spirit in flight
    Fearlessness is fearlessness
I will not forget this night
    Dare my wild heart
    Dare my wild heart

    Where is the reason
    Don’t blame it on me
Blame it on my wild heart
    As to the seasons
    You fought from the beginning
    Long before I knew it
    There was a danger
    And the danger was
    To fall in love

    In dark sorrow
They gaze down into the darkest heart
    If I leave you
You say not even you can tear us apart, whoa
    Say you’re leaving
You say, you don’t even know
    How to start
    How to start
    How to start
    Well, believe it then
And don’t blame it on my soul
Blame it on my wild heart
    Ooh, on my wild heart
    Ooh…

    Fire on fire
    Rain on my face
    Fever goes higher
    What can you do
Wild in the darkest places of your mind
    That’s where I needed you
    Where I needed you most
    That’s where I needed you
    Where I needed you most
    Where is the reason
Well, don’t blame it on me
Blame it on my wild heart
    There is a reason
    Why even the angels
Don’t give it up at all
    (Blame it on me
    Blame it on me)
    Where are the children
    Well, are they hopelessly enchanted
    Blame it on the angels
    (Blame it on me)
    (Blame it on me)
    Where are the reasons
    Don’t blame it on us
    Blame it on our
    Wild heart
    Wild heart
    Wild heart
    Wild heart

    On my wild heart
    On my wild heart

Well, even in the darkest places of your mind
(Even in the darkest places of your mind)
Whoa, are the children are they hopelessly enchanted
(Are the children like hopelessly enchanted)
Wild in the darkest places of your mind
    (Darkest places of your mind)
No, don’t blame it on me, baby

Blame it on my wild heart
(Blame it on my, blame it on my, blame it on my)
(Blame it on my, blame it on my, blame it on my)
    Ooh… Ooh… ooh…

Blame it on my wild heart
Blame it on my wild heart
(Baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby)
Blame it on my wild heart
Blame it on my wild, wild, wild
(Don’t blame it on my, don’t blame it on my)

    Wild heart
Blame it on my wild heart
Baby, even in the darkest places of your mind
    (Don’t blame it my)

  • Stevie’s best stage moves

    Stevie’s best stage moves

All the best rock stars have their trademark stage moves. Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine and pop singer Christina Aguilera are certainly aware of the attention that these singular moves command, having sung about “Moves Like Jagger” in the summer of 2011. From Chuck Berry’s rhythmic “duck walk” to Roger Daltrey’s swinging mic routine to the late Michael Jackson’s gravity-defying moonwalk, the greatest performers know exactly what it takes to put on the most memorable stage shows. The Queen of Rock and Roll herself, Stevie Nicks, is no different on her mission to leave the crowd visually spellbound at each show.

Without further adieu, here are Stevie’s Top 10 Stage Moves over the years.

    10. Air guitar, drums, keyboards… (video: Luana Barrett)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ut_-_7RPBec

Who doesn’t want to play guitar, drums, or keyboards like a rock star? Granted, Stevie is already an established rock star who has nothing more to prove, so this spectacle is unnecessary. But a girl can still dream, like in this clip, in which Stevie’s gets so lost in air keyboards that she misses her vocal cue to start “Rhiannon.”

    9. Shake those maracas! – “Sara” (video: Nicole Barker)

This is a relatively new stage move that Stevie introduced during the instrumental breaks in “Sara.” It’s kind of tribal at first glance, as Stevie raises her arms up high and shakes her hands like maracas. She even varied it in latter tours by walking backwards. At 65, that takes coordination!

    8. Crouching Stevie, Hidden Dragon (video: Andy Leo)

There’s something imposing about this great stance, like some serious sh*t is about to go dowwwwn. Stevie digs in, assumes the position, and just lets loose, like in this unforgettable performance of “Rhiannon” from Fleetwood Mac’s 1982 Mirage tour.

    7. “Say You Will” Lasso dance (video: evie1942)

The “Say You Will” lasso dance has arguably been Stevie’s most elaborate stage move because it involves so many steps. So here’s the breakdown, with lyrical cues in parentheses:

    1) Face forward and start singing, “Say you will, say you will…,”
    2) point your index finger up (“Give me one more chance…”),
    3) open your hands, bend your arms and spread them to the side (“At least give me time…”),
    4) shake your hands in disapproval (…to change your mind”),
    5) place your arms to the side, raise them up, extend them to the center (“It always seem to heal the wounds if I can…”), and finally
    6) put your left arm on your hip and wave an invisible lasso overhead with your right hand. (“…get you to dance.”)

Got it? It’s OK if you didn’t because, fortunately, we have a video tutorial. Front row fans realized that once they got the steps down, they could mimic the lasso dance at the shows. And they did just that!

    6. Happy Feet Hoedown – “Angel” (video: PresenceRO)

Miley Cyrus may have popularized the move, but she’s got nothing on Stevie’s version of the hoedown throwdown, complete with happy feet. Adorable.

    5. Graceful spinning – “Gypsy” (video: CroNix99)

She is dancing away from you now…and spinning! Stevie introduced this continuous spinning move during The Dance. It’s slower than another great spinning move that she’s known for (coming up!), but the speed is just right for the midtempo “Gypsy.” Donning a beautifully layered black dress with long, flowing sleeves, Stevie exudes elegance and grace with each turn.

    4. Interpretive dancing – “Gold Dust Woman” (video: WMG)

Nothing captures Stevie’s mystical charm like the series of moves she has put together for “Gold Dust Woman.” There have been variations on this interpretive dance over the years, and every time we see it, we are simply entranced.

    3. Marching high kick – “Gold and Braid” (video: Andy Leo)

Fans often pay homage to this memorable stage move at tribute parties. But most fans will turn to this familiar performance from the 1981 White Winged Dove Tour to rekindle fond memories of marching high kicks and flying tambourines. Unfortunately, Stevie no longer performs the move onstage, otherwise it would be higher on this list. But seeing the clip over again continues to make fans nostalgic.

    2. “Stand Back” high kick (video: WMG)

Stevie performs the “Stand Back” high kick so fast that you could literally blink and miss it. But it is a sight to behold. Stevie has mentioned in interviews that she has always been incredibly limber, boasting that she can do the full splits in a heartbeat. While we’ve never seen Stevie throw down the full splits in performance, the “Stand Back” high kick is the next best thing. (To see Stevie doing a full split, watch the opening scene of the “Gypsy” video.) If you pumped your fist in pride when Daniel LaRusso of The Karate Kid (aka “Daniel-san”) performed the winning “Crane Technique,” against his formidable competitor, then you will be knocked out when Stevie does her stage-right “Stand Back” high kick.

    1. “Stand Back” spinning (video: evie1942)

It’s probably no surprise that Stevie’s best stage moves happen in “Stand Back,” the pulsating highlight of Stevie’s live shows. The infectious beats and ominous synth notes just command energy and movement. Though her spinning velocity may vary from tour to tour, fans roar in approval whenever Stevie puts herself into circular motion. It’s a happy moment for everyone, bringing a smile to even the most jaded music fan.

TODAY IN STEVIE HISTORY: Stevie performs Leather & Lace with Maroon 5

On July 25, 2011, Stevie joined Maroon 5 during the encore of the band’s Hollywood Bowl show for a crowd-pleasing rendition of Stevie and Don Henley’s 1981 hit duet “Leather and Lace.” With Stevie stepping up her vocals and lead singer Adam Levine assuming Henley’s high tenor role, the performance received a thunderous ovation from the audience. Stevie played up the onstage antics by playfully offering her hand to Adam, who responded by kneeling and bowing before her. The crowd roared in approval.

Both acts have mutual respect and love for each others’ music.

  • VINTAGE VIDEO: ‘Edge of Seventeen’

    VINTAGE VIDEO: ‘Edge of Seventeen’

This rarely-seen video for “Edge of Seventeen” has moments of pure telenovela, which just beg for Stevie’s retrospective commentary. For example, why was brother Christopher shaking Stevie so violently (at 3:38)? Did he want her magical doll? Why is Stevie walking on the beach in her beautiful black dress? Many unanswered questions! So it’s a surprise to see it missing from the Crystal Visions…The Very Best of Stevie Nicks DVD video compilation, when the equally-campy “Scarlett Version” of “Stand Back” was included. Like that video, “Edge” has everything that we love most about Stevie Nicks videos: drama, passion, and endless spinning! Stevie’s lip-syncing skills, still in their formative years, would probably get her voted off RuPaul’s Drag Race, but there is certainly no shortness of creativity, uniqueness, nerve, and talent in this raw, over-the-EDGE performance.

  • NOTS: You Make Loving Stevie Fun

NOTS: You Make Loving Stevie Fun

The top five reasons not to miss the 23rd annual Night of a Thousand Stevies

Jackie Factory empressario Chi Chi Valenti has been organizing and emceeing Night of a Thousand Stevies since creating the party at downtown nightclub Mother in 1991. The annual Stevie Nicks tribute event is a chance for fans to come together in all their leather and lace, to twirl in shawls and chiffon, to shake their tambourines along to lovingly irreverent reinterpretations and performances of the Fleetwood Mac singer’s biggest hits and most obscure b-sides. With the 23rd annual NOTS, Crystal, coming up at Highline Ballroom, we chatted with Valenti about what to expect, what to wear and whether or not we should be on the look out for Ms. Nicks herself this year. There are about a thousand reasons not to miss NOTS. We narrowed it down to the top five.

REASON #5: It’ll Be A Wet and Wild Time!

This year’s theme was inspired in part by the experience of so many downtown New Yorkers in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Enduring the East Village blackout, Valenti says, Stevie’s song “Crystal” went into heavy rotation for some reason. “It’s about a lot of things, but it’s about the water swallowing you and kind of giving in to the water. So it just seemed like the right theme. It represents all of the watery imagery, when so often we’re always doing the birds in flight—but there are still seagulls in this one!”

REASON #4: Mermaids Are Really Trending Right Now

From Azealia Banks’ Mermaid Ball to that sexy gay Mermaid Boy, mermaids are huge right now, and NOTS is getting in on the action. “It’s going to be very mermaid and Neptune-rich as well,” Valenti says. “Machine Dazzle is doing all of our method go-gos as Stevie mermaids.”

    REASON #3: The Celebrity Sightings

Courtney Love, Cyndi Lauper, Debbie Harry and Boy George have all previously made appearances at NOTS, but there was one famous face Valenti remembers in particular. “The one and only night that Madonna ever came to Jackie 60, it was a Night of a Thousand Stevies. So she walks in and the entire place is decorated with images of another blonde diva!”

REASON #2: You Don’t Have to Look Exactly Like Stevie to Have A Blast.

One thing Valenti wants everyone to remember: NOTS isn’t a Stevie look-alike competition. “Whenever things err on the side of gay, creative, performance art—that’s always good for us.” Wild and creative looks incorporating imagery from Stevie’s songs are just as important as blonde wigs and lace shawls. For guys who aren’t into drag, Valenti suggests a classic Fleetwood Mac look, or something nautical to complement this year’s theme. One performer built his look around dream catchers for last year’s “Dreams Unwind” theme. “Some of the things that work the best are just taking one element that’s so different from the rest of your look and fusing it brilliantly.”

REASON #1: There’s Always A Chance Stevie Might Show Up!

Stevie has said on multiple occasions that she has every intention of showing up at NOTS one of these days—but in disguise and totally without warning. “I hope that the year she does it, she just decides very spur of the moment to do it and just pops in,” Valenti says. This could be the year!

Night of a Thousand Stevies: Crystal at Highline Ballroom, 431 W 16th St (btwn Ninth/10th Aves), May 3 at 9pm; $25. Visit mothernyc.com/stevie for more info.

  • VINTAGE VIDEO: ‘Blue Denim’ from Late Night with David Letterman

VINTAGE VIDEO: ‘Blue Denim’ from Late Night with David Letterman

Stevie’s performance of “Blue Denim” on Late Night with David Letterman (and her entire Street Angel saga) is memorable for a number of reasons. Stevie had recently completed treatment for a debilitating addiction to prescription medication and finally released her fifth solo recording Street Angel after several delays and attempts to “fix” the album.

Despite the tepid critical response to the album, Stevie forged on with the necessary promotion, which included a national tour and requisite TV appearances, such as the Letterman performance. Rather than sulk or go through the motions, Stevie gave it her all — busting out the bold costumes, whimsical set designs, and powerhouse vocals that longtime fans wanted her to unleash once again. Not all of the transformations worked out, but her gallant efforts proved to the world, and most importantly to her fans, that Stevie Nicks was a rock and roll survivor, crimped hair and all! Perhaps she was channeling the look of future drummer Jimmy Paxson…?

  • VINTAGE VIDEO: ‘Gold and Braid’

    VINTAGE VIDEO: ‘Gold and Braid’

“Gold and Braid” is a track from the Bella Donna recording sessions. Although it was never recorded for the album (or ANY album for that matter), it quickly became the elusive fan favorite, kind of like the “Silver Springs” of Stevie’s solo career. The iconic live version of “Gold and Braid” finally found a home on Stevie’s 1998 Enchanted box set.

Diehards will turn to this performance from the 1981 White Winged Dove Tour to rekindle fond memories of marching high kicks and a flying tambourine, as Stevie cheers “Don’t hide behind your hair, it’s a bit of gold and braid!” And that incredible band.

When Stevie performed “Gold and Braid” during her millennium shows in December 1999, she told the crowd — who had been singing and dancing along to the obscure song — how flabbergasted she was by its popularity among her fans. “This song was never recorded,” Stevie said with sheer astonishment, “That song we just played, I never recorded it. It was recorded as a demo and it went out on a million bootleg tapes. It’s amazing to me that so many people know this song that was never on a record.”

Why Stevie never completed the song in the studio remains unknown, but the enduring appeal of this concert classic is crystal clear: It’s “her life…her mystery!”

    Lyrics

Though deep set and somewhat shadowed
    Her life… her mystery
Well, it’s not so different than the way that he said
“Well, don’t hide your eyes from me that way, baby”

In his heart he wishes her stardom
His eyes want for her much more
    That’s not so different
Than the way that he said
“There are so very few stars left”
    Ooh ooh ooh…

Well, don’t hide behind your hair
It’s a bit of gold and braid
    Easy come the tears
You see a pathway ending with a doorway
    You slip toward the doorway
    Been waiting there all day
    All these years

In his heart he wishes her stardom
His eyes want for her much more
    But that’s not so different
Than the way that he said
“Well, don’t hide your eyes from me that way, baby”

Well, don’t hide behind your hair
It’s a bit of gold and braid
    Easy come the tears
You see a pathway ending with a doorway
    You slip toward the doorway
    Been waiting there all day
    All these years

    Don’t hide that…

In his heart (in his heart)
    He wishes to forget her
    Like to make her better
And to hold her like a child…

In his heart he wishes her stardom
His eyes want for her much more
    But that’s not so different
Than the way that he said
“Don’t hide behind your hair that way, baby”

Well, don’t hide behind your hair
It’s a bit of gold and braid
    Easy come the tears
You see a pathway ending with a doorway
    You slip toward the doorway
    Been waiting there all day
    All these years

Don’t hide your eyes that way
    Don’t hide anything not anymore
Because I never did not love you
I never did run from you
In a dream I said to you
    That I’d always love you…

    Oh oh oh…
    Oh oh oh…
    Oh oh oh…

    Going their own way

Fleetwood Mac to go their own way performing new songs on tour — and fans outraged at ‘tickets that cost more than my rent’

Fans might clamour for the hits from Rumours but Fleetwood Mac will perform new material on their forthcoming tour.

Speaking to BBC 6 Music drummer Mick Fleetwood said the band had written three new songs, which they plan to play on stage later this year.

The 65-year-old hinted the recordings could be part of a “long term plan” to release a new studio album.

But fans hit back today at the price of tickets for the Fleetwood Mac tour, due to play in London, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow and Dublin. Tickets are priced between £50 and £125, but with a £12.50 booking fee can reach up to £137.50 each.

One fan tweeted: “Sorry Fleetwood Mac but your tickets cost more than my rent” while another said: “£135 each for Fleetwood Mac tickets…are they having a giraffe? Top price Beyonce tickets look set to be £95 too. Robbing bastards.”

The Rolling Stones were also criticised by fans last year for the cost of their tour, with tickets selling for as much as £1,300.

After frequent changes to the line-up since the band formed in London in 1967, the 2013 tour will feature Stevie Nicks, guitarist Lindsey Buckingham, and founding members Mick Fleetwood on drums and John McVie on bass.

Fleetwood revealed this morning that he had written some songs with guitarist Lindsey Buckingham six months ago as “a calling card” for singer Nicks.

“We wanted her to know we wanted to make some new music and we had some great songs,” he said.

“But her mother died not too long after and it wasn’t the time for her to do any singing, so we dropped it.

”Then recently she’s sung on three of them and recorded one original song of hers, so we’re going to mix these songs down and there’ll be something that we will play hopefully on stage.“

Nicks vowed last year that the tour would not be the band’s last, who have had more than four decades of making music.

“It’s never going to be a final tour until we drop dead. There’s no reason for this to end as long as everyone is in good shape and takes care of themselves,” she said.

  • Stevie Nicks recalls Rumours sessions as 35th anniversary reissue hits stores

Stevie Nicks recalls Rumours sessions as 35th anniversary reissue hits stores

    2013-0129 Rumours Deluxe Edition

The 35th anniversary reissues of Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours hit stores today. The band’s historic 1977 album is available as a six-disc Deluxe Edition and a three-CD Expanded Edition. The deluxe package offers a remastered version of the original record plus the B-side “Silver Springs,” along with a variety of demos and outtakes, a CD of a ’77 concert performances, a DVD boasting a making-of documentary and a high-quality vinyl LP.

As fans familiar with the history of Fleetwood Mac know, at the time Rumours was being recorded, all five members of the band were going through major personal turmoil. Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, who were a couple when they joined the group in 1975, were in the process of breaking up. In addition, John McVie and Christine McVie had just divorced, while Mick Fleetwood‘s own marriage was on the rocks. This upheaval was reflected in, and inspired, many of the tunes that wound up on the album, including such hits as “Dreams,” “Go Your Own Way” and “Don’t Stop.”

Speaking with ABC News Radio about the Rumours sessions, Nicks admitted that as hard as that time may have been emotionally for the band members, it also was a very positive period for the group, in part because of the quality of the music being made.

“We were all writing little movies around what was really happening and we were digging it,” she explained. “We were having a lot of fun recording those songs, even though we were falling apart…If anything was keeping us from falling apart it was going into the studio every day. And we were totally having a great time.”

The singer also maintains that although she and her band mates may have been experiencing a lot of hurt with regard to the state of their relationships, on the whole, they had little to complain about.

“We were rich. We were young,” said Nicks. “We were falling out of love with each other but, hey, there was a lot of other…men and women in the world. [And] we were all movin’ on and we had these great jobs. So, as bad as it was, it was still great.”

Following its release in February 1977, Rumours went on to top the Billboard 200 chart en route to winning the Grammy for Album of the Year. It has sold more than 19 million copies in the U.S. alone, making it the ninth-best-selling album ever released in the States. Fleetwood Mac fans can expect to hear plenty of tunes from the record if they check out a show on the band’s upcoming North American tour, which kicks off April 4 in Columbus, Ohio.
