Stevie Nicks PGA West La Quinta January 17 2020
(Omar Ornelas / Palm Springs Desert Sun)

Stevie Nicks performed to a sold-out crowd at the American Express PGA WEST golf tournament in La Quinta, CA, on Friday night. She greeted the audience with a nod to her desert roots. “Welcome! Well, here we are in the desert. I’m back to my…desert roots [crowd roars]. I know! So I think that since we all know that, we’ll just get this desert party started.”

For the outdoor concert, which followed the day’s golf tournament, Stevie delivered a mostly uptempo set list of songs from her first two solo albums Bella Donna and The Wild Heart and her famous Fleetwood Mac catalog. She closed the night with a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Rock and Roll.”

After 90 shows with Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Nicks brings the house down at the American Express Concert Series at PGA West

“So, did you all play golf today?” Stevie Nicks asked the crowd of 20,000 people as the sun went down Friday at PGA West during the American Express Concert Series in La Quinta.

“My dad tried to teach me to play golf and I was about in the eighth grade,” Nicks said. “He’s very unforgiving and he wouldn’t let me go in the golf cart, and I forgot to keep score.”

Vickie Steel of Thousand Palms was positioned in front of the stage eagerly awaiting the concert to start and never imagined seeing Nicks perform at a golf tournament.

“I’ve never seen her before and I never saw Fleetwood Mac either, so I’m real excited,” Steel said. “Plus it’s at 5 in the afternoon, so this is awesome.”

Golf fans Annette and Chris Salce of Upland also watched the tournament earlier in the day. Wearing a walking cast after surgery on her foot, Annette was determined to watch the concert.

“I’m still trucking along,” she said, with a laugh. “I’m a big Fleetwood Mac fan and we saw her about three or four years ago and definitely wanted to stay for the concert. It’s a great experience and there’s a lot of young people out here — people of all ages, which is kind of cool.”

“I’ve been coming to see the golf for 25 years,” said Chris Salce. “When they started this concert series, it’s better now.”

Nicks may not be able to play golf, but she doesn’t need to. The 71-year-old vocalist still has an incredible voice that doesn’t show any signs of wear or tear, despite her continued performances — 90 shows on the road — with Fleetwood Mac for the past two years.

She started her set off slow with “Gold and Braid,” followed by the Fleetwood Mac songs “Gypsy” and “If Anyone Falls.”

Halfway through the set, as she performed Fleetwood Mac songs “Rhiannon” and “Landslide,” Nicks began to shine and the power of her vocals came through as she belted out her 1983 hit “Stand Back.”

Without skipping a beat, the song “Outside the Rain” became “Dreams.” The song “Gold Dust Woman” went on longer than usual, but was the highlight of her set as the backing musicians had their opportunity to wow the crowd.

Before closing with a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Rock and Roll,” she said it felt good to get back to performing by herself again and thanked the audience for coming out to support her.

Stevie Nicks rocks Amex “Golf-chella” to sold out crowd

The American Express golf tournament is striking all the right cords with fans. Friday and Saturday night are sell-outs, thanks to concerts from Stevie Nicks followed by Luke Bryan.

It was a landslide performance by Nicks, a rock and roll hall of famer, Friday night.

“She’s awesome. Oh my gosh, she’s incredible,” said Carmen Romoff. “We love all her songs. It’s all the songs you remember, all the songs you know by heart.”

“This is high school. I mean, she’s iconic,” said Patti Stovall.

Nicks’s career spans more than 50 years — her unforgettable voice reverberating across generations.

“She definitely has a very old soul, spirit and definitely her voice is so raspy,” said Astrid Ashworth. “She still has what she had from back 30 years ago. It’s amazing to me.”

Fans said she sounds exactly the same as they remember her from decades ago.

“Seeing Stevie Nicks brings me back to high school days in the seventies,” said Shelley Salay. “I love her music. I feel like I’m back in high school right now.”

The tournament is pleasing golf and entertainment fans alike.

“I’m experiencing great golf; I’m experiencing great music,” said Buzz Kiley.

Some of the world’s biggest names in golf hit up the course, and the weather was up to par.

“There’s been very little wind and no rain, no dust, no sand,” Kiley said.

Fans said they are looking forward to a sold out Luke Bryan concert Saturday.

“I’m beyond excited — I’m excited for tonight, I’m excited for tomorrow,” Ashworth said. “I’m definitely going to be here the whole night tonight and the whole night tomorrow night.”

Viewers reported standstill traffic both in and out of the event.
