Stevie Nicks revisits ‘Silent Night’ on ‘unusual Christmas’

Stevie Nicks revisited her 1987 recording of the Yuletide classic “Silent Night,” which closed out the very first A Very Special Christmas album. Stevie’s rendition features backup vocals from Robbie Nevil (“C’est La Vie”) and Stevie’s longtime backup singer Sharon Celani.

In 2000, Stevie recorded “Silent Night” again with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers for the A Very Special Christmas TV special. The performance was later included on A Very Special Christmas 5 in 2001.

Here are Stevie’s thoughts on the song:

I am bringing out one of my favorite things I have ever done (ever) because I think the world might need it. It is my “Silent Night” from 1987. I wrote the bridge in the middle of the song ~ and I really thought it made it more compassionate than it already was.
Please enjoy it and think of me as I will be thinking of you on this unusual Christmas.

It’s really just a love song.

    Sing with me~

    I will hear you…

    Love,
    Your Stevie

    VINTAGE VIDEO: ‘Silent Night’

    Repost

In this installment of Vintage Videos, Stevie talks about her favorite Christmas memory: waking up on Christmas Eve to find her dad unexpectedly building a baby buggy for her because “Santa was very, very busy tonight.” The interview is followed by Stevie’s Top of the Pops performance of “Silent Night,” which she recorded for A Very Special Christmas in 1987. She is joined by Robbie Nevil, best known for his hair and Top 10 1986 hit “C’est La Vie.”

Like on the classic ’80s music-countdown show Solid Gold, guests of Top of the Pops seemed to lip-synch their performances. But Stevie has the distinction of being one of the few artists to have sung live on both shows — extremely rare for the time. That’s nothing to keep silent about! Well, to be accurate, most singers performing on Solid Gold did actually sing live, according to Michael Miller, the show’s musical director for eight years. “The vocals were live and the music was taped. The reason for taping the music is that live music didn’t always sound quite as good as it should have when played through a television’s audio system.”

TODAY IN STEVIE HISTORY: Stevie performs at Special Olympics benefit

On December 14, 2000, Stevie appeared at a benefit concert for Special Olympics, hosted by the White House. Accompanied by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Stevie sang her favorite Christmas song “Silent Night.” The performance was broadcast on the TNT network on December 19, 2000 and later included on the compilation A Very Special Christmas 5, which was released the following year on October 30. Stevie previously contributed a rendition of “Silent Night” for the first A Very Special Christmas compilation in 1987.

The star-studded event featured performances by Jon Bon Jovi, Macy Gray, and B.B. King, among many others, and appearances by President Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Special Olympics is one of a myriad charities that Stevie has supported over the years.
