“In Your Dreams” is Track 3 on In Your Dreams (2011), Stevie Nicks’ seventh solo album. It follows “For What It’s Worth” and precedes “Wide Sargasso Sea” in the running order.
About the Song
“In Your Dreams” is inspired by the events that occurred after 9/11 while Stevie was on tour for Trouble in Shangri-La. In the days that followed, sound mixer Dave Natale provided Stevie much-needed reassurance before shows. “The poem (for ‘In Your Dreams’) came from when I was on the road…with my last record Trouble in Shangri-La. 9/11 happened, and I was very, as we all were, freaked out. It happened on Tuesday and we played in Atlantic City on Saturday. I wasn’t going to pack up and go home, but it was hard going out in a big, huge gathering…because we were all so scared.
“My sound mixer (Natale) would always say to me before I went out onstage, because I was so nervous, I’m right at the other side of this chord, which meant ‘no matter what happens up there, what you do, if you sing off key, or if you start to cry, I’m gonna fix it out here. It’s gonna be okay.’ So (for the recorded song) I changed ‘chord’ to ‘night.’ And I just loved that sentiment so much that I went home and wrote the poem. It’s about those people that make what you do work” (Stewart & Nicks, 2012).
While producing the In Your Dreams album, Stevie told Dave Stewart that it needed a “fast song,” so Dave created a distinctive riff that would become the foundation for the track. Stevie described it as a “funky song.”
Lyrics
Every night you
You tell me everything
Is gonna be fine
You calm my nerves when
You hold my hands
Yeah, it feels so fine
I’m just at the other end of your night
I’m always in and out of your light
Right down the middle of all your dreams
Mmm, in your dreams
Every night you
You love to hear me sing
It’s gonna be fine
You calm my fear down
It’s not a problem
No need to cry
I’m just at the other end of your night
I’m always in and out of your light
I’m right down the middle of all your dreams
Mmm, in your dreams
Are all those tears necessary
For all that pain that you carry
You just send those tears away
Come in out of the darkness
It’s a beautiful day
I’m just at the other end of your night
I’m always in and out of your light
Right down the middle of all your dreams
Mmm, in your dreams
I’m wishing your wish
I’m wishing my wish
Is gonna come true
I’m just a dreamer
A storyteller
It’s all about you
I’m just at the other end of your night
I’m always in and out of your light
I’m right down the middle of all your dreams
Mmm, in your dreams
I’m just at the other end of your night
I’m always in and out of your light
I’m right down the middle of all your dreams
Mmm, in your dreams
Mmm, in your dreams
Oh, in your dreams
