    Meeting Prince story (nraymond81)

“So here’s my Prince story. Prince and I were friends. I first met him probably in 1977 at Warner Bros. I didn’t really know who he was, and I didn’t really know what his music was. He was not that…he was that guy up there. He was not that guy yet. He was very shy and quiet, standing over there on the other end of the room. And a friend of mine took me and introduced us and I talked to him. I sat on the couch next to him and I talked to him for a minute. Not very talkative. And you know, I’m really a talker, so. So he’s like looking at me like eyes crossed, right? And I’m like Prince, you’re gonna have to learn to talk more. At that point, I just said, Nice meetin’ ya.’ I said, ‘I have to flutter. I have to go mingle a little.’ So I left and I never saw him or really heard of him again for a while up until like the beginning of the ’80s. So that was a couple of years.

In 1981 or ’82, I got married [for] 3 months — that’s it. The guy who introduced me to Prince was the guy that I married. So he and I are driving to Santa Barbara on our honeymoon and this song comes on the radio and I’m like, ‘Who is that? This is like such a great song.’ And my husband says, ‘It’s Prince. Remember that guy?’ And I’m like, ‘Yes!’ And I said, ‘Well, you know what? I’m a like writing a new song and take his song.’ And my husband says, ‘Well, you can’t do that, it’s like Prince’s song.’ And I’m like, ‘No, I’m already doing it. In fact, it’s happening in my head as we’re speaking.’ I’m like a typewriting in my head.’ So I said, ‘We have to get some paper and pencil so I can sort of remember it.’ So we went, we got paper and pencil, pulled over to the side of the road, and I got all the words written. We recorded it on a cassette — still have it — and raced back to Los Angeles to book a studio to go in and record this song.

So I went into Sunset Sound, which we already sang about in ‘Belle Fleur.’ So we recorded it with a very small band, just especially to the ‘dah dah dah-dah dah dah’ part ’cause that’s the main part of the song that’s not his song. So we recorded it, it sounded great and at one point, I said, ‘Hold up. We can’t continue. We have to get in touch with Prince. We have to find him. So does anybody in here know how to get in touch with Prince?’ Nobody. So I said, ‘Well then, call our managers, call our business people, call everybody and tell them we need to…we need a phone number. We need to call Prince because we really can’t continue this. So we’ll just sit in here and wait’ So in about 15 minutes in came somebody with a piece of paper and a number on it, ‘Here’s the number.’ And I’m like, ‘Oh my God! I can’t call Prince.’ So I go like, ‘But I have to because otherwise I can’t do this song.’ So I dial the number and the phone is answered and this man says, ‘Hello?’ I’m like, ‘Hello, Prince? This is Stevie Nicks.’ And he says, ‘Hello, Stevie Nicks. This is Prince.’ So I got through that, but now I almost don’t really know what to say. I got him on the phone. He’s nice, you know? And I said, ‘Well, this is why I’m calling: So I was driving in the car and your song came on, and what I do once in a while, I start writing another melody to your melody. In other words, I’m writing a lyrical melody and a lyric to your track.’ I’m sure he was standing wherever he was going like, [twittles fingers around head]. ‘And it’s really good, and I think you’re really gonna like it, but if you don’t like it then it’s gone, it’s done, it’s in the garbage. And where are you, by the way? Are you in Minnesota in Minneapolis in the frozen tundra?’ And he said, “No, I’m in Los Angeles!’ And I said, ‘OK! Can you come to Sunset Sound?’ And of course, I’m like getting really excited, and he can hear it in my voice. I’m going like, ‘Can you come over to Sunset Sound like soon?’ And he said, “Yeah, I can.’

So 20 minutes later in walks Prince in total purple glitter and velvet and like leggings and oh my God just so much more like dressed up than anybody in the studio. And it’s seriously like, ‘Tah-dah!’ And we’re just like standing there like really stupid, dumb people that have no business to be in the same room with this guy. So he comes in. He’s very nice. and he just looks at me and says, ‘So, play it for me. Let’s see what you got.’ I’m just about to drop dead on the floor. And so we played it, went through the whole thing, and I’m standing next him like not looking at him because the body language can totally give you away, so I’m like not even looking. And he says, ‘I love it.’ And in my head I’m going, ‘Well, that was easy. Is he lying to me?’ And he said, ‘No, really, I love it. I think it’s great.’ And I’m like, “OK. Well, do you want to play on it.’ And he said, “Sure.’

So he went out and played some synthesizer on the verses and on the middle part and he played a little bit of guitar that’s mixed in there somewhere, and that was about an hour and then we was like, ‘Well, I’m outta here…people to see, places to go. So let me know. Keep in touch and let me know what’s going on. And I love it, Stevie, and I’m proud to be a part of it. Thank you, you know.’ And so I walk him out to his car, if my memory serves me, this car was a purple Camaro! And he gives me a hug and he gets into his car, and it’s like…Vroom! He’s gone. And I walked back into the studio — it’s a lonely place now.

So that was my experience with that, and so the song that we wrote ‘Stand Back’ to was ‘Little Red Corvette.’ So your mission in life is to go home and try to stick ‘Stand Back’ into ‘Little Red Corvette.’ You can do it. Put on your musical hat.

So anyway, the great thing now about having written that song and having it be a co-written song with Prince is that Prince always worried about me through the next many years up until my final rehab in 1994. Prince worried about me — he really worried. So now that he’s gone I feel like he’s right here, and I feel like he’s watching me. He’s watching over me, and sometimes I’m very nervous when I walk out onstage, and sometimes I am, it’s different from some nights, and I’ll just go, ‘Prince, walk with me.’ And he does — he does.

So anyway, whenever you hear either one of those songs, you can think of our friend that’s up there watching over all of us and how cool it was that we accidentally got that song from ‘Little Red Corvette.’ So that’s my Prince story. There are many more, but that’s for another time.

Stevie Nicks mints golden performance at Royal Farms Arena (Jon Gallo, Baltimore Post Examiner)

“Nicks turned back the clock and took the crowd on a voyage where she unveiled her music, which has transcended generations. Nicks looked refreshed as she performed during the final leg of her 24 Karat Gold Tour, which combines recently recorded, previously unreleased songs with the array of hits that have made the former Fleetwood Mac singer one of rock’s most iconic women.”

    REVIEW: Stevie Nicks transports viewers

At 68, singer still carries same mysticism, presence

Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac came equipped Saturday night to John Paul Jones Arena. The music great had her stage appropriately set, complete with giant screens projecting experimental graphics, chandeliers and other decorative light fixtures and accompanying light play following the music’s emotional tempo.

The 68-year-old singer, most famously known for her work in Fleetwood Mac, came to a packed JPJ on the second leg of her 24 Karat Gold Tour. She transported viewers into a bygone era of classic rock through a set ranging from spirited to somber to soulful.

Though the setlist was mostly drawn from her individual cache of songs, Nicks still managed to give the crowd a taste of songs they were most familiar with. Nicks mostly pulled records from what she calls “the dark gothic trunk of lost songs.” This included previously unreleased or unperformed records she made with the late and great Prince and tracks made with Tom Petty. Nicks broke up her set with anecdotes about her first car and the backstories behind her songs.

The downside to seeing an older artist may be a general lack of youthful energy, and Nicks was only a small exception. But she combatted the problem by working with it. She did not punch the audience with one booming hit after another. Instead, Nicks allowed the slow set to be embroidered with stories from her turbulent and — at times — hilarious past. The audience left the show with a fuller picture of Nicks and her music in a way that isn’t normally delivered by younger artists.

Nicks substituted high energy for an intimacy that defied the stadium-sized crowd. The stage’s theatrical set-up, Nicks’ hard-hitting lyricism and her friendly interaction all made the show one of the most worthwhile to come through Charlottesville. Nicks spiced up the show with several wardrobe changes and fun hits like “Edge of Seventeen” and “Gypsy.”

For the encore, Nicks and company opened with “Rhiannon,” stirring the audience into roaring applause with its soothing melody and energizing pick-ups. They then treated the audience to the all time great “Landslide,” along with the touching story behind it. It was this song, written while sitting cross-legged on a carpet with a view of the Aspen mountainside, that convinced Nicks to stick with her burgeoning music career — a choice that changed the landscape of music for decades to come.

Fans wait to hear old favorites held until late in show (Curtis Schieber/ Columbus Dispatch )

“Nicks has taken the opportunity to focus on a selection of her material deeper than just the hits and, more importantly, to tell the stories behind most of them. It was, perhaps, too much information.”

Stevie Nicks shares inspiring stories through and outside music (Hannah Herner, LSU The Lantern)

“Stevie Nicks is exactly what I wanted her to be, but I know she doesn’t care what anyone wants her to be. When the 68-year-old rock star took the stage at Nationwide Arena on Friday night, clad in a black lace dress and crazy-tall boots with a tambourine in hand, I knew it was going to be a night to remember.”

On Wednesday night, Stevie Nicks performed at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans — the 37th show of the 24 Karat Gold Tour. Stevie returned to the “city of dreams,” where performing her Hurricane-Katrina-inspired-song “New Orleans” obviously took on a special meaning.

“Thank you. That’s another one of the songs that’s always played at my show. And every once in a while I do actually say to each of the band members, ‘Can we just not do ‘Rhiannon’ this time?’ And they’re like [gasps]! Never works.

So this song, this song we’re gonna do now, was written in Aspen, Colorado in 1973. I was there in the winter in the frozen tundra, and Lindsey had gone to be the other half of the Everly Brothers because Wally actually couldn’t go, so Lindsey got the job instead. Right? So they didn’t need an Everly sister. They didn’t, so I got dumped in the snow in Aspen and I took my best friend Terry with me because I knew I was gonna be up there by myself, and I wasn’t gonna be up there by myself.

So Terry and I ended up at this horrible apartment with this horrible fisherman guy who lived upstairs, and it was not going to be a good thing. So we were there like one day and said, ‘No!’ So we packed up our stuff and we like kind of put everything back in — you guessed it — the Toyota, which wasn’t moving then either ’cause it was stuck in the snow and it had no reverse. So we just met some really nice people and they…it’s some really nice guys…it’s not what you might think at all. It was totally above… They gave us one of their three bedrooms and so we had a really nice play to stay for the entire time that Lindsey was gone. And so anyway, one night they knew people there because they lived there. They said, ‘We’re gonna go to dinner with these great people so why don’t you guys come with us?’ So we did and they had this beautiful house, this beautiful living room, and this beautiful view and I said, ‘Can I just not go with you to dinner and just stay, sit here on the floor, and look out at this, and write a song?’ And they, ‘Of course you can!’ And so they left and I had my Goya, my little classical Goya guitar and I sat and I wrote this little song.

Never in a million years did I think — once back to having your dreams coming true —  never in a million years did I think that this little song that I could play on the guitar would be the song that basically took us to the top. And not only that, but it has been off and on for several many years the favorite Super Bowl commercial song. So keep it in mind that one little tiny thing can change everything. So this little song is called ‘Landslide.’”

RECAP: Austin, TX – Frank Erwin Center

On Sunday night, Stevie Nicks performed at Frank Erwin Center in Austin, TX — the 36th show of the 24 Karat Gold Tour. It was a lively weekend in Austin, as music revelers were also in town for the vibrant SXSW Conference & Festival. “Well, what a trip to be here during South by Southwest!” Stevie told the audience at the start of the show. Drummer Mick Fleetwood, who also in town for SXSW, was also at Stevie’s show.

Stevie visited the Lone Star State earlier in the tour, making stops in Houston (10/29) and Dallas (10/30).

Greetings from Austin, TX! (Lacey Monceaux)

“I’d like to tell you a little story of this show. It’s not exactly the same Stevie Nicks show you’ve seen over the last 300,000 years. It’s different because I decided that at my age I was going to put together a show that has the songs in it that I love to sing and have never sung onstage before. So I went back through my many, many magical trunks of the lost songs, I call ’em, and pulled out my favorites and I put this little tapestry thing together, and I hope you enjoy it because it’s a lot of fun for me, it’s very, very creative. And anyway, it is a trip and it is a journey, so come with me! Let’s go!”

Stevie Nicks soars (Abby Johnston, Austin Chronicle)

“Since Nicks drove, the arena had no choice – and happily so. 2014’s 24 Karat Gold: Songs From the Vault prompted the platinum maker’s tour through solo output beginning with 1981 bow Bella Donna. If anyone came to hear mostly Fleetwood Mac songs, you couldn’t tell.”

Stevie Nicks and the Pretenders make a non-SXSW splash at Erwin Center (Peter Blackstock, Austin360)

“This concert was all about playing to die-hard fans of both bands, beyond the scope of music industry connections. When Nicks last visited Austin with Fleetwood Mac two years ago, she and the band addressed the crowd with a sense of finality, knowing it might well be the last time those five members would play together in Austin. But that didn’t mean Nicks wouldn’t come back on her own.”

It’s like, ‘We’re in the money…’ It’s so great! But we would get picked up in a long, big, black, shiny limousine. And we also got a first-class ticket for a couple of places we flew off to do some press. This just killed me because I was so used to that Toyota and I was so used to living in that other world. Then all of a sudden, it was just like…it was, it was frightening almost. So anyway, what happened was, with the limousine, it started to become a thing that came to take me away — beautiful and grand and expensive and famous — but it was pulling up to my house to take me away. And if I had a boyfriend, it was goodbye and the relationship was basically over. So that started to stand for that. And as much as loved the limousine, it was kind of a sad thing. So I wrote this song about it because I thought, well, we should put… There’s the good and there’s the bad —  it’s about being a famous rock star. So this song was written about that picture in my head of walking away from my house and waving goodbye to somebody and knowing that was probably it, until I found something else (lauging), which was never very long, so anyway. So anyway, the song’s called ‘Belle Fleur.’

New Orleans – partial (Christina Martisek)

    [jwplayer mediaid=”378793″]

You need to write this stuff down. I’m like a reporter, I chronicle stuff, I’m an archivist — I think that’s the right word. And I don’t want people to forget, and I think people do forget. If you don’t write stuff down, it’s gonna just…time’s gonna just make it fade. So I continue to watch television every day for a couple of days. I wrote this poem, and I had to be very careful with what I was writing because you can’t, you know, you can’t… It was gonna be bad. We knew it, I knew it, we all knew it. So I had to write something that was somehow hopeful and somehow uplifting because otherwise in 10 years all the people from New Orleans will say, ‘Well gee, thanks for writing that horrible, horrific dirge about our city.’ And I’m like…so you’re going like, ‘I don’t want that so I have to figure out a way to look at this from another way.’ So I thought, OK if I was…if I had a magic wand, what would I do? I would make sure that most of the dogs that were in the water were saved; most of the people were pulled out of the water; most of the houses were rebuilt; the government slowly came in and did something…slowly; and people survived and they rebuilt their city; and they made this amazing, new, beautiful city — this quirky, unique, weird city. They brought it back because that’s what they’re gonna do, and that’s what I’m gonna write about. They say, you know, if you paint the picture, it will come true. Or if you build a field, they will come. So that’s what I tried to do with it. So anyway, we’re gonna play it for you now and it’s called new Orleans.

    Twilight (A Vampire’s Dream)

Thank you. That song is probably my favorite song that I’ve written in a very long time. Just to make it short because this story is just way to long. It’s about vampires, which we know don’t really exist, but they do in the Twilight saga. And so I fell in love with that relationship between Bella and Edward, and it just took my heart, and I went straight to the piano, and I wrote this song in Australia, and I said, ‘Well, I guess I’m gonna have to make a record now because I can’t just put this one song out. So I went into the studio and made In Your Dreams and kind of walked back into the recording part of this business. The Internet had just driven me away because it was so…you know, you can’t sell anything. Who cares! I’m financially stable — it wasn’t that. It’s just the principle of it. But now, I don’t care because I can just go and make records and put ’em out and have a great time and then go back into the… It’s fine. So anyway, that is the story of Bella and Edward. So thank you and otherwise, we’re just leave them up in the twilight.

… I had my Goya with me — that’s a little classical guitar. And they said, ‘Sure!’ So I spent a couple of hours there by myself, and I wrote this little song. Once again, I was just a little girl, and this little song took us all to the top. So sitting cross-legged in fringe jeans and thinking, well, it’s a cool song, I love it, and I’m happy, and off I go to the rest of my life. Never did I have any idea that this song would do what it did, besides like being the favorite Super Bowl commercial. It’s like so many things, you know? And so I just want you to keep that in your heart and remember that — the little, tiny song, little tiny dream, ah…poof! So this is ‘Landslide,’ that little song.

Stevie Nicks can still deliver lots of surprises (Erin McCarty, News Radio 710 KEEL)

At age 68, Stevie Nicks still commands the stage and can deliver quite a show. It’s very obvious from the beginning of her show at the Century Link Center, she was going to do her own kind of show, not the typical Stevie Nicks show. She told the crowd “come enjoy the journey with me.” Read the full review.
