On October 3, 2022, Stevie Nicks performed at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, with 17,000 attending the sold-out concert.

Being a high-profile show, many of Stevie’s friends, family, and colleagues were also in the audience, such as producer Jimmy Iovine, fashion designer Margi Kent, and Fleetwood Mac bassist John McVie and his daughter Molly. Stevie acknowledged and gestured towards John and Molly at the end of “Landslide.”

Fittingly, Stevie dedicated “Wild Heart” to outspoken comedian Kathy Griffin, saying “Kathy Griffin, this is for you.” Kathy reacted on Twitter, gushing, “OMG! OMG! YOU GUYS! WHAT JUST HAPPENED?! I about fell out of my seat when my pal @StevieNicks dedicated ‘Wild Heart’ to me at the Hollywood Bowl!”

Percussionist Taku Hirano, who toured with Fleetwood Mac on their 2003 Say Will You tour, was at Monday night’s show. “It warmed my heart to see the Queen and my touring family perform last night at the Bowl. ” Taku wrote on Facebook. “She’s still kicking ass (of course 👢), singing like a bird (white winged dove? 🕊) and touching people. 🖤 Love it!”

  • Stevie Nicks, timeless as ever at the Hollywood Bowl

Stevie Nicks, timeless as ever at the Hollywood Bowl

The iconic singer’s performance was full of classic hits, touching tributes, and yes, lots of shawls.

MOST PEOPLE WERE winding things down on Monday night in Los Angeles yesterday, but the streets near the Hollywood Bowl were buzzing with thousands of fans doing their best Stevie Nicks impressions. They wandered toward the venue, paying homage to the rock star’s many eras, wearing outfits that captured her effortless Southern California Seventies glam or showing off examples of her witchy drapery, capturing the style and spirit that make Nicks a timeless icon.

Those fans were there to attend her sold-out show at the historic venue on Monday evening. The performance was part of a tour she kicked off earlier this year, which she’s scheduled in spurts between festival sets and shows at select US cities.

Nicks’ longtime friend Vanessa Carlton opened the night with a brief set that, of course, included a venue-wide sing-along to “A Thousand Miles.” Shortly before 9 p.m., the stage lights dimmed and Tom Petty’s “Runnin’ Down a Dream” blasted from the sound system. It would be the first of many touching tributes to Petty, who made Nicks an honorary Heartbreaker. It’s an gesture she’s taken seriously ever since.

Nicks’ setlist focused heavily on Bella Donna, The Wild Heart and her Fleetwood Mac classics, a decade-long stretch of career home-runs that showed she was a living legend before time had the chance to do so itself. After opening with “Outside the Rain,” she got “Dreams” out of the way, prompting a beautiful bit of harmonizing from the audience.

Any fan of Nicks knows that she’s a natural born storyteller, and on stage and in interviews, she’s more than happy to share long-winded tales of her life, her songs, and her famous friends and lovers. Early on, Nicks made a promise that she would rein it in for the night with her stories, even though this particular show had an audience full of some of her closest confidantes.”I have so much to say,” she promised. Some fans giggled and would have been happy to bask in as many tales she would have liked to spin.

She made good on her promise to keep it short and sweet, though: Before “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around,” her hit 1981 duet with Petty, she recalled how her producer and then-boyfriend Jimmy Iovine (who was seated in the crowd) told her she needed a single for her solo debut. He then clued her in on the Petty-penned track. Just as she launched into her recently released cover of Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth,” she sang the praises of songwriter Stephen Stills. And she prefaced a twirl-filled “Gypsy” with some life advice about pulling your mattress off the bed frame to remind yourself who you are. Later, she dedicated In Your Dreams’ “Soldier’s Angel” to the people of Ukraine, singing it in tribute to one Ukrainian woman, in particular, named Julia who had sent Nicks a paining of sunflowers that she displayed on screen as the song began.

As Nicks sang her way through her past, she continued to breathe new life into some of rock music’s most classic and enduring songs. She belted “Wild Heart” as effortlessly as she did nearly 40 years ago (after dedicating it to comedian Kathy Griffin, naturally). During “Gold Dust Woman,” she embodied the same feverish, frenetic stage presence that made her Seventies performances of the song so iconic, moving as if possessed by the guitar solo while wrapped in a golden shawl (one of four she pulled out during the night, including the blue one she wore on the back cover of Bella Donna).

The final stretch of the show was an unrelenting series of hits. “Landslide” was dedicated to her many godchildren as well as John McVie, her close friend and “therapist.” The main set concluded with an extended cut of “Edge of Seventeen,” before the encored kicked back off with a cover of Petty’s “Free Fallin’.” The song fit her like a glove, a true tribute to one of her best friends and musical heroes, whose likeness was displayed on a slideshow behind Nicks as she sang it. She ended the song by staring at some lingering shots of the him and her together, performing on stage later in his life.

Unlike other shows on this tour, Nicks skipped frequent show closer “Rock and Roll” (a cover of the Led Zeppelin classic) in favor of her own “Rhiannon,” a more fitting finale. The Bowl’s attendees ranged from teens to Boomers, and in that moment, like many before it, it didn’t matter how or when Nicks’ songs found their way into your life. The show erupted into one final, loud, sing-along before the truly timeless star twirled off into the California night.

RECAP: Ohana Festival – Dana Point, CA

On September 30, 2022, Stevie Nicks performed at the Ohana Festival in Dana Point, California. Stevie headlined Friday night of the three-day music affair. Stevie settled into a shorter set list for the festival show, performing a concise 15-song set focused on her popular songs from Bella Donna, The Wild Heart, and her Fleetwood Mac song catalog. She also included her new Buffalo Springfield cover “For What It’s Worth” (released as a digital single on September 23) and Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin‘” (recorded for Music from Party of Five in 1996).

Eddie Vedder, who headlines tonight, made a surprise appearance, joining Stevie onstage for “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around.”

Stevie shared a different story for “Gypsy,” alluding to how she copes with her mental health and is able to center herself. “When I get really upset or really freaked out or I’m just having a hard time; I’m having a breakdown, right? I take my bed off the frame and put in on the floor” she explained. “Put some really beautiful coverlets on it, and some paper flowers, and you go back to feeling like your normal self!”

So this song is a song about…that I wrote at the very beginning of Fleetwood Mac and um… So when I get like really upset or really freaked out, or I’m just having a hard time, I’m having a breakdown, right? I take my bed off the frame and put in on the floor. This gives me a sense of 1973 back before I became famous and rich and everything else that goes with giving you that angst, the stomach ache, the nerves, and all the rest of it. So put your bed on the floor, put some really beautiful coverlets on it, and some paper flowers, and you go back to feeling like your normal self! It’s ‘Gypsy.’”

“Thank you. So time capsule moment, this is cape is the original Bella Donna cape. It’s on the back of the cover of Bella Donna. As you will notice, it is in perfect condition. A good piece of fabric is worth every penny because it will last for the rest of your life. Thank you.”

    Review

After her last appearance almost 20 years ago, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Stevie Nicks returned to Bridgeport on Saturday for a headlining appearance at Sound On Sound music festival. The 74-year-old singer-songwriter led the audience in an hour-and-a-half performance that saw Nicks perform hits from all eras of her career.

Nicks, who was rather talkative during the show, introduced songs like a show-and-tell presentation — offering insights and stories behind songs like “Gypsy” and “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around.” Fans of Nicks’ Fleetwood Mac work walked away pleased as the singer of group belted classics like “Landslide,” “Dreams” and “Rhiannon.”

One surprise moment of the show was a rendition of Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth,” which Nicks recently recorded and released on streaming platforms on Sept. 23. Nicks told the crowd that she has always admired the songwriting craft of Stephen Stills, and wanted to record her own version of the song.

Nicks’ last solo show in Connecticut occurred at Mohegan Sun Arena in 2016 while Fleetwood Mac’s last Connecticut performance happened in 2019, according to setlist.fm. The last time Nicks performed in the Park City was in 2003 with Fleetwood Mac at the Arena At Harbor Yard (now-Total Mortgage Arena).

Other acts that performed throughout Saturday included The Lumineers, Caamp, The Revivalists and Father John Misty. Sound On Sound returns Sunday with a lineup headlined by Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds as well as other acts like Brandi Carlile, The National and The Roots.

Review: Stevie Nicks conjures magical performance at Connecticut’s First Sound on Sound Music Festival

From Fleetwood Mac to FX’s American Horror Story to Bridgeport’s first-ever Sound on Sound music festival, Stevie Nicks proves she’s the white witch to watch live. Here’s Showbiz Cheat Sheet’s review of Nicks’ Sound on Sound headlining performance.

“Wow, there you are,” Nicks said to a packed seaside crowd.

The “white witch” traveled to Bridgeport Connecticut for the inaugural Sound on Sound music festival. On Saturday, Nicks appeared onstage, ending the night with live versions of “Edge of Seventeen,” “Landslide,” “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around,” “Dreams,” and more hits.

Even if it was cold outside, Nicks mentioned her band’s performance on an even colder night. For her, stopping at Bridgeport, Connecticut felt like “a sunny day in California.”

In an effort to present fresh, new material, sometimes artists forget that a festival set isn’t a headlining concert. The fan-favorite songs shift when artists like Father John Misty and the Lumineers are also thrown into the mix.

Nicks knew exactly who her audience was for Sound on Sound. The singer performed a mix of solo songs and Fleetwood Mac hits. She twirled with her shawl and played her tambourine covered with ribbons. This artist even shared her secret to unwinding when facing anxiety.

“I take my bed off the frame and put it on the floor,” Nicks told the audience. “I don’t know — everything gets better. I go back to the foundation — the beginning of my fun, rock ‘n’ roll life. I feel like a different person. I feel younger. It works. You must try it.”

Nicks mentioned some of the inspiration behind “For What It’s Worth,” which told the story of people asked to go home before 10 p.m. As a rocker herself, Nicks identified with Buffalo Springfield’s song about taking risks and breaking the rules.

Nicks even noted her musical relationship with Tom Petty, covering “Free Fallin’” for the Connecticut-based event. Just as Nicks performed “Edge of Seventeen,” a flock of birds appeared overhead.

It was a magical end to a witchy, black velvety smooth performance from the Fleetwood Mac member. Definitely a highlight for a day filled with music, food, drinks, and early autumn seaside vibes.

Even if the Sound on Sound Festival received criticism for logistic reasons, Nicks proved to be a highlight for many attendees. The artist even performed Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon” as an encore.

Other artists featured in the Sound on Sound lineup include Brandi Carlile, The National, Jenny Lewis, Father John Misty, Ziggy Marley, CAAMP, and Gary Clark JR. The Lumineers appeared ahead of Nicks on Saturday, while Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds headline on Sept. 25.

And somebody that I just know, their house and I was there, and I just said… We were all going out to dinner, and this was the year that Buckingham Nicks came out. And I said can I just sit in your 10 million dollar living room and write a song. And they said, ‘For sure, of course.’ So they all left me in this beautiful house and I wrote this song. And when I walked out of the house that night in snowy, snowy Aspen, I said, ‘This little song has the potential to do something. I don’t know what, but something. And in fact, this little song kicked Fleetwood Mac right into the universe.

“So I would like to dedicate this to a friend of mine, who came out on the road for the last several days to take our road manager’s place because he had to go party. I mean, parties are important, that’s okay. So anyway, Doug Casper, my friend, this is for you. This is ‘Landslide.’”

    Review

On Thursday, the autumn equinox brought the start of fall to Maine, bringing with it the legendary Stevie Nicks, one of the most occult figures in popular music. She enchanted the Bangor crowd with poise, presence, and a voice that improbably hasn’t aged a day since she boarded the Fleetwood Mac tour bus in 1975. She also has an incredibly extensive music collection and a fashion sense so distinctive that you could tell exactly where dressed-up concert attendees were driving if you saw them at gas stations.

Arrival of autumn coincided with a marked drop in temperature and sporadic showers that drenched concertgoers just enough to give the cold wind some bite. But it made no discernible difference to the crowd’s mood. At Maine Savings Amphitheater, the crowd was loud and upbeat the entire time, yelling furiously whenever Nicks left the microphone to perform her signature twirls. At 74 years old, this was a more delicate proposition, making the effort all the more appealing. She also, coincidentally, began the performance with a medley that specifically alluded to the weather, starting with “Outside the Rain” from her 1981 solo album “Bella Donna” and including a smooth transition into the Fleetwood Mac classic “Dreams” (featuring the “thunder only happens when it’s raining”

She used her solo discography more frequently than her Fleetwood Mac discography throughout the show. There were almost as many tributes to her buddy Tom Petty as there were to Fleetwood Mac; she sang their duet “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around,” covered his “Free Fallin’,” and entered the stage to Petty’s “Runnin’ Down a Dream” playing over the sound system.

Her solo material demonstrated the breadth of her composition, almost as if she had written songs particularly for a lengthy and enjoyable concert set, when mixed with her Mac stuff. “If Anyone Falls” and “Stand Back” were two options for dance tracks with a strong synthesiser influence. With “Enchanted,” “Gypsy,” and “Bella Donna,” you got barroom blues, soft-rock, and power balladry, respectively. To extract the most drama and contrast from the material, this range was all practised and performed with a professional backup band.

The two songs that concluded the concert, “Gold Dust Woman,” from Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumours,” and “Edge of Seventeen,” her biggest solo hit, were the best examples of this. After a protracted intro to “Gold Dust Woman,” Nicks reappeared on stage draped in a gold shawl. Additionally, it had long musical sections in the middle and the finale, during which Nicks danced wildly. At the conclusion of the song, she stood facing the audience while rising her arms so that the shawl looked like wings.

She sung the lyric “I’m getting older too” in the song “Landslide,” which she has been singing for almost 50 years, getting more pointed with each passing year. She still interprets her earlier stuff as if she wrote it yesterday, keeping endlessly vibrant even as we all age. Her songwriting mix of young energy, unique viewpoint, and wise-beyond-her-years words have aged amazingly well.

  • Concert review: Stevie Nicks as talented and charming as ever in Bangor show

Concert review: Stevie Nicks as talented and charming as ever in Bangor show

The Fleetwood Mac singer’s set Thursday was wide-ranging and pulled primarily from her solo career

    CONCERT REVIEW
    WHO: Stevie Nicks
    WHERE: Maine Savings Amphitheater, Bangor
    WHEN: Thursday, Sept. 22

The autumn equinox officially brought fall to Maine on Thursday, and with it blew in one of the witchiest women in pop music, the great Stevie Nicks. Possessing an extraordinarily rich catalogue of music and a fashion sense so distinct that if you saw dressed-up concert attendees at gas stations you’d know exactly where they were driving, she charmed the Bangor crowd with poise, presence and a voice that improbably hasn’t aged a day since she climbed onto the tour bus with Fleetwood Mac in 1975.

Autumn’s arrival also brought a noticeable drop in temperature and scattered showers that dampened concertgoers just enough to add some bite to the cool wind. This didn’t have any noticeable effect on the crowd’s spirits, however. The audience at Maine Savings Amphitheater was on its feet and boisterous throughout, screaming wildly whenever Nicks stepped away from the microphone to take flight into her trademark twirls – a more delicate prospect at age 74, making the effort all the more endearing. Coincidentally, she also opened the concert with a medley that directly referenced the weather conditions, beginning with “Outside the Rain” from her 1981 solo album “Bella Donna” and featuring a silky segue into the Fleetwood Mac classic “Dreams” (featuring the “thunder only happens when it’s raining” line in the chorus).

Throughout the set, she dipped more heavily into her solo catalogue than her Fleetwood Mac catalogue. Indeed, there were almost as many nods to her friend Tom Petty as there were to Fleetwood Mac – she came out on stage to Petty’s “Runnin’ Down a Dream” playing over the sound system, performed their duet “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” and covered his “Free Fallin’.”

Her solo material, combined with her Mac material, proved how far-ranging her songwriting is, almost as if she wrote songs specifically for a full and satisfying concert set. If you wanted synthesizer-fueled dance songs, you had “If Anyone Falls” or “Stand Back.” You had barroom blues with “Enchanted,” soft-rock with “Gypsy” and power balladry with “Bella Donna.” This range, performed with a polished backing band, was all exercised to draw maximum drama and contrast from the material.

This was most evident in the two songs that closed out the set: “Gold Dust Woman,” the final song from Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumours,” and “Edge of Seventeen,” her biggest solo hit. “Gold Dust Woman” featured a long, drawn-out intro, before Nicks reemerged to the stage wearing a gold shawl. It also contained lengthy instrumental passages in the center and the end, with Nicks dancing with carefree abandon. At the song’s close, she stood with her back to the audience, raising her arms so that the shawl resembled wings.

On “Landslide,” the prior song, she sang the line “I’m getting older too” – a line she has been singing for nearly 50 years, with increasing pointedness with each passing year. Her songwriting balance of youthful energy, singular perspective and wise-beyond-her-years lyrics have aged remarkably, and she’s still interpreting her older material as if she wrote it yesterday, remaining endlessly vibrant even as we all grow older.

On September 19, 2022, Stevie Nicks performed at the Xfinity Center in Mansfield, Massachusetts. Like the Asbury, New Jersey show, Stevie removed both In Your Dreams deep cuts “Soldier’s Angel” and “Moonlight (A Vampire’s Dream) from the set list. “Free Fallin’ moved up to regular set, playing between “Bella Donna” and “Stand Back.”

Stevie offered up two key dedications. After kicking off the show with the “Outside the Rain Dreams” combo number, she dedicated the entire show to Vanessa Carlton’s seven-year-old daughter Sidney, who was in the audience seeing her mom and Stevie perform for the first time. “This is a good night for Sidney!” Stevie gushed.

Towards the end of the set, Stevie dedicated “Landslide” to Queen Elizabeth II, reading the tribute that she first shared online when the Queen passed away on September 8, 2022. She dubbed Elizabeth the “Warrior Queen” and a great inspiration.

She knew when to get in the way and she knew when to get out of the way to just think about what she would do next. She was very smart ~ and very beautiful ~ and she made it very clear to all the brilliant men that surrounded her ~ that she was the Queen ~ and they were not. She showed all women how strong they could be ~ for 70 years she did this. She inspired me. She was an anointed Queen, a beautiful Queen and an unforgettable woman~ The world is an empty place without her~

“Fast forward to today. Elizabeth is now gone to be with Phillip — and I love that. So one more thing, when you as women think you can’t fight one more day for what you believe in, as women are fighting here for so many things, just think of the Queen, who never gave up doing the right thing for everything that she believed in. Plain and simple, she was a Warrior Queen. For me, she is a great inspiration, and who she was as a woman, will live in my heart forever. Tonight, we will all sing for the Queen. This is ‘Landslide.” If you know it, sing along.”

RECAP: Sea. Hear. Now Festival – Asbury, NJ

On September 17, 2022, Stevie Nicks performed at the Sea. Hear. Now. Festival in Asbury, New Jersey. Stevie headlined the first night of the two-day festival, with Green Day closing it out on Sunday.

    (Matt Smith/NJ Advance Media)

Rock and roll photographer Danny Clinch organized the festival along the North Beach Asbury Park, located on the famous Jersey Shore. Stevie thanked Danny after welcoming the crowd, saying “To have a festival right on the ocean is pretty spectacular.”

Stevie dedicated “Landslide” to her goddaughter Tessa, Mick Fleetwood‘s twin daughter (from Mick’s third marriage to Lynn Frankel). She mentioned that both Mick’s twin daughters, Ruby and Tessa, are her goddaughters, but only Tessa was in the audience on Saturday night. “I don’t see you very often, my angel, but I’m always with you,” Stevie said, her voice cracking with emotion.

    Sea Hear Now Festival

At this show, Stevie removed “Soldier’s Angel” and “Moonlight (A Vampire’s Dream)” from the set list. “Free Fallin’” moved from the first encore position to the regular set, playing between “Bella Donna” and “Stand Back.”

    Outside the Rain (Jim Powers)

    Dreams (Jim Powers)

“Welcome, Everybody! Welcome, Asbury Park! Is this the world of Bruce Springsteen? I don’t know!? Okay, we’re driving through and then there’s a street sign and I’m like, I asked that same question. Nobody really answered me, at least not like you guys just did!

“All right, anyway, I would like to thank Danny Clinch for putting on this amazing, amazing music festival. To have a festival right on the ocean is pretty spectacular. I live on ocean so for me it’s like I feel like I’m right at home. And so that being said here on the Jersey Beach Shore, let’s get this party started.”

    If Anyone Falls (Jim Powers)

Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around (Jim Powers)

“Thank you. This next song was the first song off of Bella Donna and without the song it is, we might not be standing here today. Thank you, Tom Petty, for this song, ‘Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around.’”

For What It’s Worth (Stephanie Heffelfinger)

“So this next song is a song that I actually recorded in May and it’s coming out in the next two weeks. … So what it is, it’s a song that was written in 1966 by Stephen Stills and it really wasn’t a political song. It was actually written about the riots on Sunset. I hadn’t moved there yet. I was still in San Francisco, so I wasn’t there for this. But there was riots because the police came in and said, ‘Hey, you guys gotta get out of the streets. People in the hills don’t like it.’ And they’re like, ‘Ugh, what? At what time?’ And they said, ’10pm,’ and they’re like, ‘Oh. Okay, right. You’re just gonna come tell us when we can go to bed.’ So Stephen Stills wrote this song. Okay, the things that you want to talk about, right? I just thought that sometimes music saves the world and this would be a good song for right now, so I hope you enjoy it. I hope you enjoy the song. Whatever, I love it! So here it is. It’s called ‘For What It’s Worth.’”

    Gypsy (Stephanie Heffelfinger)

    Landslide (Annia Kay)

    “Thank you for that.

“So this next song, I’d like to make a quick dedication to my friend Mick Fleetwood, one of his two twin girls; her name’s Tessa. She’s my goddaughter. They’re (Ruby and Tessa) both my goddaughters, but only one is here tonight. So… (inaudible) When she was four, looked at me and said, ‘Come sit with me.’ I fell in love with her on that day. So Tessa, this is for you, and I don’t see you very often, my angel, but I’m always with you. So this is for you, this is ‘Landslide.’”

    Review

As the ocean breeze fluttered the scarves and chains dangling from her microphone stand, Stevie Nicks gazed out over the immense crowd — some 30,000 strong stretched a quarter-mile down the beach, a vision of late-summer Jersey Shore serenity — and described the scene as only she might: “a fairytale.”

“Is this the world of Bruce Springsteen?” Nicks asked early in her 90-minute performance, egging on the crowd. While The Boss did not appear, no shine was lost from Nicks’ emphatic set, which echoed effortlessly over the waterfront expanse and beyond the waves painted green, pink and blue by filtered lights. Attend enough festivals and you’ll learn some artists’ voices just don’t carry well in such monstrous settings. But Nicks, 74, was in full command, unloading a mix of solo classics and Fleetwood Mac staples, twirling in place and traipsing around the stage as her eight-piece band played on.

The night’s single-most affecting moment came, perhaps unsurprisingly, during “Landslide,” which Nicks tearfully dedicated to Tessa Fleetwood, Mick Fleetwood’s granddaughter and her goddaughter, who was in attendance. The crowd belted along, many eyes similarly dampened.

More explosive were the crashing renditions of “Gold Dust Woman” (with flecks of golden dust swirling on the big screen), and her synth-laden solo cut “Stand Back.” And of course, “Edge of Seventeen” ignited the audience once more. Nicks sang “Free Fallin’” as a tribute to her close friend Tom Petty, who died in 2017, with happy images of Petty and Nicks on the screen.

She also unloaded a sharp cover of Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth,” preceded by a funny quip: “I hope you all like it, whatever, I love it.” I’ll take Stevie’s attitude eight days a week.

And the set finished with a rousing take on Led Zeppelin’s “Rock N’ Roll,” sending the audience off on a high. It was a propulsive performance, noticeably more high-octane than her solo tour I covered a few years back, and surely the most memorable headlining set in Sea Hear Now’s young history. Pure joy and power.
