The incomparable Stevie Nicks thrilled fans (including more than a couple gay men) at TIFF Bell Lightbox ahead of the Canadian premiere of her new documentary, In Your Dreams.  The doc, created with Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics, takes a behind the scenes look at the making of her 2011 album of the same name.

Nicks is also playing a Fleetwood Mac gig on April 16 at the Air Canada Centre. Fleetwood Mac hit the big time in the 1970s. Their 1977 album, Rumours, had four number one hits, including “You Make Loving Fun,” “Go Your Own Way” and “Don’t Stop.”

Nicks has maintained a rock star status through the years and has had a successful solo career with such hits as “Edge of Seventeen” and “Stand Back.” A recent episode of Glee introduced a new generation to Nicks and Fleetwood Mac.

In the below video interview with Xtra, Nicks talks about today’s music industry, including her favourite new artist.  The documentary In Your Dreams plays at TIFF April 16-18.

  • Stevie Nicks In Your Dreams: Q&A with Dave Stewart

Billed as an “intimate portrait of one of rock’s most enduring and legendary artists,” In Your Dreams, a documentary on the making of Stevie Nicks’s 2011 album of the same name, runs the risk of being too intimate for its own good. Musician Dave Stewart, who co-produced the album, shared directorial credit on the film with the singer herself. We spoke with him about a documentary being too close to its subject.

    ROCK

Sound City – Real to Reel soundtrack

    ★★★★

Dave Grohl’s interesting new documentary shows how a grungy, rundown Los Angeles recording studio made a number of fascinating rock albums by the likes of Tom Petty, Cheap Trick, Nirvana and Rage Against the Machine. The beauty of the soundtrack supporting the documentary is that it’s recorded on the run — through outdated analogue recording equipment where a warts and all approach celebrates the immediacy of the music.

Sometimes the songs feel half-done, but are pushed along by the capabilities of the artists, such as Stevie Nicks, Trent Reznor, Josh Homme, Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick, members of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (BRMC) and Brad Wilk of Rage Against the Machine. Nicks’s “You Can’t Fix This” is a revelation, sounding like a tougher Fleetwood Mac as a warning is wailed out to a past lover. “Heaven and All” is Grohl and BRMC twisting the music to slow-burning riffs in its low-key glam-rock way. Whereas Rick Springfield of “Jessie’s Girl” fame throws away all that ’80s trash for more abrasive, uncompromising rock in “The Man that Never Was.”

No frills indeed, this is real music.

“We never in a million years thought that this would happen to me—I’d be standing here. So I’m as surprising as anybody that people seem to really enjoy and love our little film. As The Beatles would say, ‘This is a day in the life.’ This is not really a documentary. This is not about 40 years. This is about now. This just happened two years ago. And what I want you to know is that we wanted you to be sitting there on my red couch with us. And you are sitting there with us because we knew, as we were doing it, when it starts to roll, you know, I’d get goosebumps. We knew that this was going to be seen by people and that you would feel like you were right there with us, that you were my close personal friends, and you just came by, and we said, you know, ‘Here’s an ice tea, and here’s the fireplace, and you just get comfy.’ And that’s what this is. And so I hope that you enjoy it. And I hope that it is day in your life that you will never forget because I will never forget it. I’ll never get over it. It was the best year of my life.”

Jim Ladd: “Stevie Nicks,” Ladies and Gentlemen, “Stevie Nicks. Enjoy the film.”

  • Stevie attends Hollywood premiere of In Your Dreams, chats with fans

As promised, Stevie appeared at the sold-out Hollywood premiere of her documentary In Your Dreams on Sunday night at the Landmark Theater. Wearing sunglasses and trademark black, Stevie participated in a question and answer session following the first two screenings. Radio personality and longtime friend Jim Ladd moderated the Q&A.

Fans in the Los Angeles area showed their support by cheering and applauding loudly, as Stevie entered the theater, walking hand-in-hand with Ladd. Stevie waved to the audience in appreciation. Once settled, Stevie talked with Jim Ladd about the making of In Your Dreams and then answered questions from the audience.

Here is a partial transcription of Stevie’s introductory remarks:
